US Dollar 10,000 seized from passenger at Mangaluru Airport

Mangalore, Aug 19: A total of 10,000 US dollars were seized from a passenger en route to Dubai from Mangalore Airport, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) said on Monday.

According to the CISF, foreign currency was recovered from a passenger, identified as Shashank Bysani Gupta, during the frisking process at the Mangalore airport.

"The passenger had concealed a bundle of foreign currency (5100 USD) in his trouser's pocket. When his handbag was searched thoroughly, an amount of 4900 USD was also found kept in a pouch," CISF said in an official statement.

The officials also added that the passenger along with confiscated currency 10,000 USD has been handed over to Customs officials for further necessary action.

Customs officials offloaded the passenger and an investigation in this regard is underway.

Wayanad, April 7: The Kerala government has allowed people from border villages of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to use medical facilities at Wayanad.

"We have opened our borders to people from neighbouring states who require medical facilities in Kerala. Twenty-nine people from Bairakuppa in Karnataka have used medical facilities in Wayanad and 44 from Tamil Nadu," Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday.

Bairakuppa, a small village in Karnataka, is separated by the river Kabini from Wayanad district and the residents there depend on the healthcare facilities available in Wayanad.

Speaking to news agency, Adeela Abdulla, District Collector of Wayanad, said that instructions have been issued to allow people from neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who need medical facilities, to cross the border.

"Right from the start of the lockdown, we have not restricted individuals from Bairakuppa region in Mysore district to use the medical facilities in Wayanad as people in that region depend on medical facilities in Wayanad," she said.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: An elderly woman who was tested positive for COVID-19 in Dakshina Kannada district today breathed her last.

The deceased is a 77-year-old woman from Bantwal taluk. 

She is said to be a close relative of the Bantwal woman who died of COVID-19 on April 19.

She was shifted to govt Wenlock Hospital which is now converted into COVID-19 hospital on April 22 from a private hospital.

Her throat swabs were sent for testing. Health and family welfare department earlier today confirmed that she was tested positive for coronavirus.

Within hours she breathed her last without responding to any treatment. 

So far 17 corona positive cases have been confirmed in the district including two deaths. Most of them have returned home after recovering.
