Ballari, Aug 25: BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh has stirred controversy by apparently provoking Hindutva activists to target those who hurt “Hindu sentiments”.

Santhosh, who hails from Udupi district, was addressing a gathering during a Hanuman Mala event at Moka village on the outskirts of Ballari, a region which hardly witnessed any major communal violence so far.

"A section of society is out to provoke Hindu sentiments by indulging in or supporting cow slaughter and forced conversions. We know the ways to deal with such people. We can set afire like Hanuman did in Lanka, if they do not mend their ways," said Santhosh.

He also reiterated that BJP will soon fulfil its promise of constructing Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Udupi, Jun 28: A student appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Kaup taluk of Udupi district has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

Officials of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Department have confirmed the report.

The 16-year-old girl had appeared for the Kannada and Mathematics exams on June 25 and 27 respectively.

Her throat swabs were sent for testing on June 27 after her father tested covid-19 positive. Today she too obtained positive report.

The student is unlikely to appear for the science paper on June 29.

Meanwhile, health officers have ruled out the possibility of subjecting other students to covid-19 test as all necessary precautions such as physical distancing and usage of sanitization were taken in the examination centre.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: The Siddi community in Karnataka got its first lawmaker as Governor Vajubhai Vala nominated five persons, including Shantharama Budna Siddi, to the Karnataka Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Shantharama Siddi had been working as a social worker and was a post holder at the Vanavasi Kalyan Prakalpa, a tribal welfare initiative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Siddis, an ethnic group in India, are said to have descended from the people of the East African region. They are included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Karnataka.

Apart from the Shantharama, the inclusion of CP Yogishwar, who had left Congress to join BJP in 2017 but failed to retain his seat in the 2018 Assembly polls, is also considered as a big decision.

Adagur H Vishwanath, another former JDS leader, who had quit his party and joined BJP but failed to retain his seat has also caught the attention of the people.

Further, Governor Vala has nominated Talwar Sabanna and Bharathi Shetty to the Upper House in the state.
