Mangaluru Violence: KSHRC to hear on Dec 31

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) will conduct a hearing into the alleged police brutality during the December 19 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru on December 31.

The KSHRC had received complaints from Bengaluru-based Advocate Rakshith Shivaram, Mahila Congress national social media coordinator Lavanya Ballal, Bantwal Town Municipality councillors – Luqman Bantwal and Monish Ali urging them to initiate ‘suo motto’ action against the Mangaluru Police commissioner and other officers responsible for the "firing" which claimed two lives. They have also appealed to provide justice to the victims.

The city police violated the human rights guaranteed to the citizens of the country under the constitution as well as the UN Charter, it is stated in the complaint.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar on Friday said that the next academic year will have to be shortened as it will delayed due to the COVID-19.

Mr Kumar in a meeting with Education Department officials said that the syllabus and curriculum for the academic year will have to be designed according to time available. Additional content in the syllabus will have to be removed, according to a statement issued here by the education department here on Friday.

The Minister also stated that plans are underway to conduct CET examination meant for admission into professional courses immediately after the SSLC examination.

He also advised the officials to make the Department’s YouTube channel feature more subject-wise and chapter-wise content for the aid of the students.

Additionally, a booklet will be launched to teach students on how to adjust to life in the post-COVID-19 world.

Bengaluru, Apr 27: A 57-year-old man died of COVID-19 in Kalaburagi on Monday taking the fatalities due to the virus in Karnataka to 20.

"One more person died due to COVID-19 in the state. The 57-year-old person was tested positive for coronavirus on April 21," Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar tweeted on Monday evening.

The minister said he was admitted to the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences with respiratory problem.

He was also suffering from severe liver related ailments.

"With this five deaths have taken place in Kalaburagi district due to the virus," the minister added in his tweet.

The first COVID-19 death in the country was reported from Kalaburagi in March.

Puttur, Jul 7: A woman died after a wall of compound collapsed on her in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday, July 7. 

The victim was identified as Vasanti.

The wall got weakened due to heavy rain at Golithottu area in Puttur. Her body was sent to the post-mortem.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.30pm when Vasanti was working in the backyard of her house.
