Mangaluru Violence: KSHRC to hear on Dec 31

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) will conduct a hearing into the alleged police brutality during the December 19 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru on December 31.

The KSHRC had received complaints from Bengaluru-based Advocate Rakshith Shivaram, Mahila Congress national social media coordinator Lavanya Ballal, Bantwal Town Municipality councillors – Luqman Bantwal and Monish Ali urging them to initiate ‘suo motto’ action against the Mangaluru Police commissioner and other officers responsible for the "firing" which claimed two lives. They have also appealed to provide justice to the victims.

The city police violated the human rights guaranteed to the citizens of the country under the constitution as well as the UN Charter, it is stated in the complaint.

Mangaluru, July 31: Extending Eid al-Adha greetings to the people, S M Rashid Haji, president of the Bearys chamber of commerce & industry has termed the festival as a symbol of sacrifice and patience. 

“Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibraheem’s (a) test of faith and sacrifices. It symbolizes sacrifice and endurance,” he said.

“Every human being during his lifetime faces one or the other test from the Almighty… Now we are collectively facing the hardship... May this festival bring goodness and peace, and herald the end of pandemic,” he said.

Shivamogga, May 12: Roopa Praveen Rao, an expectant mother and a nurse at a hospital in Shivamogga's Karnataka, has chosen to continue to serve the patients amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Rao who hails from Gajanuru village is nine months pregnant and works at Jayachamarajendra Government Hospital as a nurse.

She travels every day to Thirthahalli taluk to attend to the patients at the hospital.

"The taluk hospital is surrounded by many villages, people need our service. My seniors had asked me to take leave but I want to serve people. I work six hours a day," she told news agency.

She added that Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa too called her up and appreciated her dedication and suggested that she should take rest.

Rao is one of the many frontline COVID-19 warriors who have been risking their lives to ensure that everyone stays safe as the country fights the coronavirus.

Mangaluru, July 14: In order to detect COVID-19 cases quickly in Dakshina Kannada, the government has commissioned a programme to administer rapid antigen tests.

The coastal district has already received 3,500 rapid antigen test kits, which can give results in 30 minutes, an official said, adding that tests will be conducted shortly and training is being imparted on the use of the kits.

The antigen tests will be conducted for emergency cases like delivery, surgery, persons with severe symptoms of Covid-19, multiple-organ failure and for those whose condition is critical. 

"If a symptomatic patient tests negative for Covid-19, then his throat swab sample would be sent for lab testing," the district health officer (DHO) said.

The rapid antigen tests is expected to help in increasing the number of tests and bring down the load of testing on labs, as antigen kits allow faster diagnosis.

It takes a minimum of eight hours to get the results via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test. Antigen tests can provide results within half an hour.
