Electricity bill to go down from January in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Dec 31: Power consumers in the state can heave a sigh of relief in the first quarter of 2020. Reason: Karnataka State Regulatory Commission will slash the Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC), a component of consumer electric bills, by nearly 60%.

FAC, which refers to charges that electricity supply companies (Escoms) raise based on the varying cost of fuel (coal), has been brought down to 12 paise per unit for Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) consumers. The FAC was 29 paise/unit in Bescom limits the last quarter of 2019.

December 20 order

In June 2019, the FAC was hiked by slightly more than 60%. The latest order from KERC, issued on December 20, has brought the FAC down by nearly 60%.

The FAC is down by 4 paise/unit for Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) consumers, 7 paise/unit for Hubbali Electricity Supply Company (Hescom) consumers and 6 paise/unit for Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company consumers. FAC for Mescom is also applicable to consumers falling within the ambit of Mangaluru SEZ and those of Hescom to consumers of Hukkeri RECS and Aequs SEZ.

Mangaluru, May 9: An Indian expatriate worker from Karnataka’s coastal district of Dakshina Kannada died of in Dubai after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The deceased has been identified as Yashwant, 37, hailing from Malali Kajila House in Tenkulipady village, on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

He was working as an air-conditioner mechanic in Dubai for the last two years.

As per sources, he suffered a heart attack. However, the exact cause of this death is yet to be known.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Six persons, said to be supporters of Social Democratic Party of India, have been arrested in connection alleged attempt to murder a member of RSS in Bengaluru.

Varun Bhopala (34), a resident of Sarakki in JP Nagar, was attacked while he was on his way to his father's shop near JC Road after attending a pro-CAA event organised by the RSS and other Hindutva organisations on December 22, 2019.

Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said the arrested are Irfan alias Mohammed Irfan (33), Syed Akbar alias Mechanic Akbar (46), Syed Siddiq Akbar (30), Akbar Basha (27), Sanaulla Sharif (28) and Sadiq UL Ameen (39) - all residents of KG Halli in East and North Bengaluru.

Rao said the arrested wanted to attack and kill the leaders who took part in the pro-CAA event. They initially pelted seven stones to scatter the crowd so that they can attack the leaders, but they failed. Later, they saw Varun walking out of the crowd wearing a saffron shirt. So the arrested followed him and attacked him with lethal weapons. Assuming he is dead, the gang fled on their bikes towards Bidadi.

''The SDPI activists were funded by their leaders to create a disturbance, kill Hindu organisation leaders,'' Rao said. "I have formed a special team to investigate in-depth about the SDPI activities and take necessary action,'' he added.

Gadag, Feb 20: A 33-year-old Muslim man is all set to become a seer at Muruga Rajendra Mutt in Gadag.

Ordained by Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami of the mutt, Dewan Sharief Mullah claims he was taking the step not under any duress but after being "guided by the almighty".

"Nobody asked me to do it. The almighty came in my mind and guided me.... They have put the sacred thread and given me the responsibility. They have given me the 'Ishta-linga' and this honour. I have done the 'Ishta-linga dharan'. I will walk on the path of dharma. Love and sacrifice is the message given to me. That is what I want to propagate," he said.

Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami said, "It does not matter what caste you belong to. If God appears to you for a path of goodwill and sacrifice, you will do it regardless of the manmade restrictions of birth and caste."
