Communal clashes in Bihar after video on deities goes viral on WhatsApp

Chhapra/Patna, Aug 7: Communal violence broke out in parts of Saran district of Bihar on Friday after a video showing desecration of deities of a community went viral on WhatsApp and other social media. The situation remained tense on Saturday, forcing the administration to take out a flag march in the district.

clashTill Friday night, violence was limited only to the Maker block. But on Saturday morning, it spread to Chhapra. Rioters damaged several police vehicles and district magistrate Deepak Anand was injured in brick-batting. More than 2,000 armed security personnel were deployed on the streets of Chhapra by Saturday afternoon.

The administration has imposed prohibitory orders till Monday and ordered immediate shutdown of Internet services in the district.

"The situation is tense, but under control. Even though group clash took place on Saturday morning in town area, the rioters were immediately dispersed," Anand said, adding that four people have been arrested for rioting.

Maker police station SHO Sanjay Kumar Gupta said one Mohammad Mubarakh (22) of Dakshin Tola in Maker, who presently lives in Bengaluru, put the objectionable video on social media.

Saran ADM Rajesh Kumar said three companies of Bihar Military Police, two companies of ITBP and one company of Indian Reserve Battalion have been deployed in Chhapra. "One company of Rapid Action Force has been called from Ranchi, Jharkhand," the ADM added. Besides, two companies of STF are on way to Chhapra from Patna and Gaya.

Udupi, Jul 8: Four people have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Yogish Poojary (26), a resident of Laxminagara in Tenkanidiyoor in Udupi. A gang, which arrived in a car had attacked Poojary with lethal weapons on July 6.

The arrested are rowdy sheeter Sujith Pinto (37), his elder brother Rohit Pinto (43) Annu alias Pradeep (40) and Vinay (36). Police have continued the manhunt to nab two more accused – Girish and Anup. 

The accused were arrested from Kallianpur last night following which the accused were to murder spot as part of investigation.  The police also seized the car and knives that were used for the crime. 

Police sources said that the accused were under the influence of alcohol when the stabbed Poojary repeatedly with knives.

Three teams headed by sub-inspectors of Malpe, Udupi city and city crime branch took part in the operation.  The accused have been booked under station under section 143, 147, 148, 302 and 149 of IPC.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: A 45 year-old man committed suicide by jumping into Netravati River from the bridge near Thokkottu along with his six-year-old son in the early hours of Sunday here, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Gopalkrishna Rai and his son Aneesh Rai, residents of Baltila in Bantwal.

According to the police, Gopalkrishna along with his wife Ashwini Rai and son had come to Konaje for a family programme. At about 4:30 a.m. he came to the bridge with his son, left a suicide note and jumped into the river.

Mangaluru, Jan 27: JD(S) leader and former Labour Minister K Amarnath Shetty passed away at a private hospital in Mangaluru on Monday morning. He was 80. Shetty was unwell for sometime, and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago, family sources said.

Amarnath Shetty, a trustee of Alva's Education Foundation (AEF), had joined politics in 1965.

He became the president of Paladka Gram Panchayat and soon was elected as MLA from Moodbdri constituency in 1983. He won the successive elections held in the same constituency in 1987 and 1994. He had served as Tourism and later as Labour Minister.
