Mangaluru, Jul 14: B Ramanath Rai, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister has said that the principal Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boycotting the all-party meeting indicates that it does not want restoration of law and order in the district.

Presiding over the meeting here, Mr. Rai said that the May 26 stabbing of a minority youth by others at Kalladka was a plot to foment communal disturbances in the district.

While the district had witnessed intense communal clashes claiming more life earlier, the present disturbance has been continuous, being created through “guerilla” techniques. Besides the BJP, which had declared its intentions to boycott the meeting earlier, the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders too boycotted the meeting protesting against the administration’s refusal to allow party president H.D. Deve Gowda to hold a peace march in the district.

Responding to suggestions in the meeting, Mr. Rai said that he would lead a “peace march” in the district comprising political and religious leaders after prohibitory orders under Section 144 were lifted. He asked the administration to use its discretion while considering the plea to lift Section 144 in Sullia, Puttur and Belthangady taluks.

“The demand could be to foment trouble in those taluks too,” he said.

The Minister said that he and his Ministerial colleague U.T. Khader have decided not to react to some statements, as otherwise the war of words would not end.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rai said that he would offer a “harike” at Uddabettu Dargah to prove his “innocence” which is disputed by the BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders in the communal unrest.

Participants in the meeting, including a few Christian priests and Left leaders, urged the administration to deal with the trouble-makers with an iron hand. Everyone knows who is creating trouble and such people should be dealt with accordingly.

The police force at the lower level should be reshuffled as a majority of them have remained in the same place for years together, some suggested.

Mr. Khader [Food and Civil Supplies Minister] said that though the murdered Ashraf Kalai and Sharath Madiwala belonged to certain organisations, they did not have any criminal record. The government would pay compensation to their kin, he said.

MLAs K. Abhayachandra Jain, B.A. Mohiuddin Bava, Shakuntala Shetty, Mangaluru Mayor Kavita Sanil, Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadeesha and senior police officials were present.

Vijayapura, June 16: Even as a video of a man wearing a burqa who is being thrashed by locals is going viral on social media, netizens targeted Bharatiya Janata Party for their activist resorting to heinous acts.

The man who was caught in burqa has been identified as Siddu Paragond, an activist of Snagh Parivar hailing from Sindgi town in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district.

The bizarre incident took place in Sindgi on June 11 outside a bank.

“While people including women were standing in a queue outside the bank, the person in burqa was acting in a suspicious manner. The person was trying to get too close to women which was making them feel awkward,” local residents said.

“Getting suspicious, some locals tried to interact and their suspicion rose with the strange behaviour of the person. Suddenly some men took the person away from the bank and checked only to find that it was a man in burqa. The men thrashed him and handed him over to police,” the sources said.

Confirming this, Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said that the Siddu Paragond has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He, however, made it clear that no suspicious objects were found on Siddu. “We are trying to find out the motive for his act,” the SP said.

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar has urged his party colleagues to be active on social media to counter the propaganda of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media persons, the KPCC president said that no more than 20 out of the 68 Congress MLAs are active on social media.

“All those MLAs who are doing well need to be projected. We want leaders, not mere followers. They all should be the face of Congress in Karnataka. Party should not depend on just my face or Siddaramaiah’s,” he said.

Shivakumar’s diktat has resulted in the party’s social media unit scrambling to get leaders to create their accounts.

“We’re pressuring all the party MLAs and leaders. We’re asking their personal assistants or gunmen to operate their accounts if they are not savvy with social media,” KPCC social media chief A N Nataraj Gowda said.

He pointed out that the 20 MLAs who are active on social media include U T Khader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Priyank Kharge, Krishna Byre Gowda among others.

“We’re also trying to get the accounts verified of those who are beginning to get active. For example, it was only recently that we got the accounts of S R Patil and Vijay Singh verified,” Gowda said.

Tapping the full potential of social media is crucial for the Congress because the BJP has found much success in reaching out to voters through various online platforms.

In fact, ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress found that there were 10 ministers and some 40 MLAs who had turned a blind eye towards social media.

Shivakumar said he was also working on putting in place a system in the party under which all developments related to the state and country will be communicated to all party leaders at 10 am every day.
