Udupi, Jul 9: Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies are fully responsible for communal tensions in Dakshina Kannada, and not the police, according to G Parameshwara, the president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.param4param3

Responding to presspersons on the situation in Kalladka and other parts of Dakshina Kannada, after visiting the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple here, Mr Parameshwara said there was no failure on part of the police in Kalladka.

“I regret to say that the BJP leaders and workers are provoking communal passions in Dakshina Kannada. Owing to this, people are losing their lives. Even the Pejawar seer had held iftar to promote harmony and peace among communities. The BJP is doing this with an eye on elections,” he said.

To a query, he said some forces were trying to create confusion in the society over the iftar organised by the Pejawar seer. “We welcome the seer’s move; my party wants harmony and peace in the society,” he said. On the recent visits of former Chief Minister and BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa to Dalit colonies in the State, Mr. Parameshwara said that it was all a “drama”.

“If Mr Yeddyurappa was really bothered about the Dalits, he should have tried to do something for them when he was in power. Everyone knows that it being done for political gains,” he said.

Following a complaint from the Secretary of the Jama’ath, the police had formed three separate teams to nab the miscreants.

Based on tip-offs, the police detained BJP member Pandi (41) and VHP member Akhil (23), both from Rathnapuri in Coimbatore for inquiry.  The duo has also been remanded to judicial custody.

According to a statement by the Coimbatore police, the accused told the police that they hurled petrol bomb at the mosque to protest against the attack against Anand, a Hindu Munnani functionary a few days ago. The accused also reportedly told the police that they were planning to create more chaos.

Madukkarai Anand, the District Secretary of Hindu Munnani was attacked on March 4, while he was returning home after participating in a pro-CAA dharna organised by the BJP and allied parties in Gandhipuram.

He was allegedly followed by men on two motorbikes, who attacked him with rods. Anand suffered head injuries in the attack and was admitted to a hospital. The Podanur police registered a case for attempt to murder based on a complaint and had also formed special teams to nab the accused. However, no one has been apprehended in that case till now.

Based on the statements given by the accused, the police arrested the two men, seized the two-wheeler they used, two cell phones and the things they used to manufacture the petrol bomb.

Bengaluru, Jan 30: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who reached the national capital on Thursday, said he will discuss the much-awaited Ministry expansion with the BJP high command.

"It's been long that I visited Delhi. I will meet the party national president J P Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah and take their suggestions on the cabinet expansion," Yediyurappa told reporters.

The chief minister said he will also call on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and discuss about development issues related to Karnataka.

Yediyurappa has been anxiously waiting for the high command's nod to expand his ministry amid intense lobbying by the aspirants.

Opposition parties have been critical of the BJP and Yediyurappa over the delay in cabinet expansion, alleging that he was weak and that the administration had collapsed.

As the chief minister has already made it clear that 11 of the disqualified JDS-Congress MLAs who got re-elected in the bypolls on BJP tickets will be made ministers, lobbying has been on in the party for the remaining ministerial berths.

Currently, there are 18 Ministers, including the chief minister in the cabinet that has a sanctioned strength of 34. Sixteen berths are vacant.
