Bengaluru, Feb 3: On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit here,a war of words ensued today between ruling Congress and opposition BJP over the latter's national president Amit Shah's claim that the Centre gave Karnataka more than Rs three lakh crore under various schemes.

Addressing a press conference, Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao and Karnataka agriculture minister Krishna Byregowda termed Amit Shahs statements "as nothing but lies." "BJP has only.... half-truths to offer to the people of Karnataka.

The money given to the state has been likened to largesse.BJP speaks as though the money it devolves to states is a gift or a handout, while in reality all states are constitutionally entitled to this amount," said Rao.

He alleged that Shah and other BJP leaders have been employing 'less than respectful tactics' in a bid to see the Lotus bloom in the south once again. "The people of Karnataka have seen the manner in which the BJP government plundered the state during its term from 2009 to 2013," he added. Byregowda said Karnataka received Rs 10,533 crore less than what it is entitled for.

"We know that you (Prime Minister) wont give us Rs 3 lakh crore tomorrow... at least you have to release the shortfall in the grants towards Karnataka," he said. He said this money was Karnataka's right and that the shortfall was a dent in the state's grants. "You not only have to issue a clarification on this issue, you also have to release the grants.

This will make us accept that you have respect for the Constitution," he added. Reacting to this, BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa hit out at Congress, saying that the party was lying with regard to grants in order to hide its 'inability'.

He said the NDA government increased the Central grants, including those by the 14th Finance Commission,by 42 per cent. "The Modi government doubled the central grants allocated by the previous UPA government," Yeddyurappa said.

Social media giant Twitter briefly blocked the Karnataka BJP's account after it posted several provocative tweets and taunted Muslim women.

Ironically, the BJP called its unhygienic tweets as "liberal views". "It is unfortunate that our handle was locked out by Twitter for speaking the truth about liberals," it said.

"A big thanks for your support and encouragement. Satymeva Jayate. Jai Hind," the political party said to its supporters.

However, it did not specify for how long Twitter blocked its account but tweeted again on Wednesday after Monday.

Last week Karnataka BJP drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

It tweeted on Monday, accusing Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Vijay Bahuguna for "cheating" Dalits.

Karnataka BJP spokesperson G. Madhusudhan said that he had no idea about the account being blocked and then unblocked by Twitter.

"What has happened? I don't know," said Madhusudhana.

Reacting to the drubbing BJP suffered in the Delhi Assembly polls, the party tweeted that there is no need to lose heart.

"Now is the time to go back to voters to win their hearts and minds. Let us plan for 2025 from today. We are with you," tweeted Karnataka BJP on Wednesday.

Though BJP congratulated Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for winning the Delhi polls, the party highlighted that it managed to increase it vote share by six per cent compared to 2015.

Udupi, Feb 16: Nine people were killed after a private bus collided with a large roadside boulder in Udupi district in Karnataka on Saturday, the police said. The accident took place on Saturday evening, at around 5.45 pm, on the Mulnur Ghat at Abbas Kattingeri in Mala village, while the bus was on its way to Mangaluru from Sringeri, reported the news channel.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying around 35 passengers, was trying to manoeuvre a turn while travelling on a ghat road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit a massive boulder and the impact caused seven people to die on the spot. Two others passed away while they were on the way to the hospital.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Radha Ravi, Yogendra, Preetham Gowda, Basavaraju, Angana, Sharul and Ranjitha. The cleaner of the bus was also killed in the accident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were mostly in their early 20s and were employees of Vital Records Private Limited near JCK Industrial Park. Century Vital Records is a data security company which works in the Hebbal Industrial Mysuru. The group was visiting Udupi, Hornadu and Kudremukh.

While some of the injured persons were rushed to Manipal hospital, others were taken to the Karkala city government hospital, police said.

The police have said that rash and negligent driving by the driver is likely to have caused the accident. A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station, the police said.

Last month, three persons were killed and four others were injured after a fatal collision between a van and a bus near Bengaluru. Both the vehicles caught fire after the impact, but while passengers of the bus, travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga, managed to escape, the three passengers who were trapped in the van could not escape and were charred to death.
