Cong hits back at Modi, JD(U) says one selling poisonous tea can't be PM

January 19, 2014
Ludhiana/New Delhi, Jan 19: Hitting back at Narendra Modi over his remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Congress today said BJP can "only" name Prime Ministerial candidates and not give "strong" PMs, even as JD(U) joined the tea-seller spat saying a person selling "poisonous" tea should not hold the top post.

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken asked why the party should follow BJP's "failed" model of "PM-in-waiting".

"BJP only gives prime ministerial candidates while the Congress gives strong PMs to the country. During the last two general elections, there were only candidates who came forward from BJP, the PM came from Congress and UPA only," Union minister Manish Tewari told reporters in Ludhiana.

His remarks came after BJP led by Modi took a dig at Congress for not naming Rahul as the Prime Ministerial candidate, saying Sonia Gandhi wanted to save her son from being "sacrificed" politically in view of "imminent" defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.

Modi, who was once a tea vendor, also hit at out at the 'chai wala' barbs at him by Congress leaders accusing them of "feudal mindset".

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had mocked Modi's prime ministerial ambitions saying he will never attain his goal in this century and a tea stall will be identified for him at the AICC venue.

Addressing the party's National Council here, Modi said that "those born in an aristocratic family" feel below their dignity to contest against a tea vendor coming from a backward community.

While the Congress yesterday distanced itself from such remarks, JD(U) leader K C Tyagi said that a person selling "poisonous tea" through Gujarat to the country should not become the PM.

"A tea boy can become a PM, but a man selling poisonous tea should not become one. Narendra Modi through Gujarat has sold poisonous tea to the country. Persons selling tea are good people, persons selling poisonous tea are bad people," Tyagi said.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid too reacted strongly.

"Modi won't decide who will be sacrificed. We are here to sacrifice for our party, for our ideology, for our country, for our youth. What is his problem? Is he ready to make sacrifices?," the Congress leader told reporters on the sidelines of Jaipur Literature Festival.

Tewari said he was confident that Congress will yet again get blessings of the people in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls and give the country a strong Prime Minister.

The Trinamool Congress attacked both Congress and BJP saying they are two sides of the same coin.

"In the next Lok Sabha elections, people will vote for a viable alternative. It has already happened in the Delhi Assembly elections. We feel the prospects of a federal front are very bright in the next general elections," Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy said in Kolkata.

New Delhi, Mar 4: A court in Delhi on Wednesday convicted expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of the Unnao rape victim's father.

District judge Dharmesh Sharma said Sengar had no intention of killing the victim's father. “He was beaten in a brutal manner that led to his death,” the judge said.

The court had sent Sengar to jail on December 20 for the “remainder of his natural biological life” for raping the woman in 2017, when she was a minor.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had examined 55 witnesses in support of the case and the defence examined nine witnesses.

The court had recorded the statements of the rape survivor's uncle, mother, sister and one of her father's colleague who claimed to be an eyewitness to the incident.

Charges were framed against Sengar, his brother Atul, Bhadauria, sub-inspector Kamta Prasad, constable Amir Khan and six others in the case.

The case was transferred to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on the directions of the Supreme Court on August 1 last year.

In July, 2019 a truck rammed into the car the rape victim was travelling in with some family members and her lawyer.

Two of her aunts died in the incident. She was airlifted from a hospital in Lucknow and to AIIMS in Delhi.

The victim has been provided accommodation in Delhi and is under CRPF protection.

Jun 20: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remark that neither is anyone inside India's territory nor has any of its posts been captured, alleging that the PM has "surrendered" Indian territory to Chinese aggression.

In a statement on the all-party meeting called by Modi on Friday to discuss the situation at the India-China border, the government said, "At the outset, prime minister clarified that neither is anyone inside our territory nor is any of our post captured."

Tagging PM's remarks with his tweet, Gandhi said, "PM has surrendered Indian territory to Chinese aggression."

"If the land was Chinese: 1. Why were our soldiers killed? 2. Where were they killed?" Gandhi said.

The categorical statement by the prime minister came in the wake of reports that Chinese military has transgressed into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control, the de-facto border, in several areas of eastern Ladakh including Pangong Tso and Galwan Valley.

Soon after Gandhi's tweet, Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted video of father of a soldier, who was injured in Galwan face-off, and hit out at the Congress leader, accusing him of indulging in "petty politics".

"A brave armyman’s father speaks and he has a very clear message for Mr. Rahul Gandhi. At a time when the entire nation is united, Mr. Rahul Gandhi should also rise above petty politics and stand in solidarity with national interest," Shah wrote.

The prime minister's assertion came even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi, at the all-party meet, questioned the government's handling of the situation, asking if there was any intelligence failure, and seeking assurance that China will "revert" to its original position.

Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused senior ministers in the government of "lying" to protect the prime minister and that the Centre was "fast asleep" while martyred jawans paid the price in Ladakh.

The former Congress chief also tagged a one-minute video of a jawan's father saying the Indian soldiers were unarmed when they were attacked by Chinese troops.

He has been questioning the government on the LAC standoff and asking how the Chinese occupied Indian territory and why Indian soldiers were sent "unarmed to martyrdom" in Ladakh.

Twenty Indian Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff in the region.
