Ismail (52), a resident of Nelyamajalu village and president of Congress Minority Wing of local unit, was brutally hacked to death by a gang of miscreants on September 23 in front of a mosque when he was about to board his car after offering juma (Friday) prayer.

Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, superintendent of police, on Monday told media persons that three teams of police managed to catch the seven accused from three different places in two days.

Abdul Rashid alias Munna (32), a resident of Kulaimane in Bantwal, Abbas alias Ibn Abbas (32), a resident of Krishnapura were arrested on Sunday from Mattu village in Udupi. On the same day Umar Farook AK (32), a contract killer from Kedila village was arrested at Kadaba in Puttur taluk.

Four more accused — Rahman Bellare alias Rahim Bellare, Yakub Bejai, Farooq Bellare and Suhail Nandavara — who plotted the murder, were arrested on Monday based on the information given by the trio.

A Maruti Ritz car bearing number KA 19 MB 3068 which was used to carry out murder was also seized by the police.

Property row

Mr Borase said that a property dispute between two of the seven arrested accused and the management committee of the Zakariah Juma mosque in Bellare led to the murder of Ismail as he had apparently supported the mosque committee members.

He said, Rahman Bellare and Yakub Bejai hatched a plan to eliminate Ismail after the latter used his influence to help the mosque committee against them.

As per plan, the contract killers were waiting in their car outside the mosque. When Ismail stepped out of the mosque and began to walk towards his car, the assailants followed and attacked him with lethal weapons. Even though Ismail had a licensed pistol, he had left it in the car before entering the mosque.

The SP said that in 2014 Rahman Bellare and his brother Siddiq Bellare had attacked Ismail and his wife Waheeda Ismail, who was the president of Bellare Grama Panchaya over the same issue.

Bengaluru, Feb 16: Deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi’s election to the lone vacant council seat, for which a bypoll has been called, is only a formality as the only other candidate in the contest, independent BR Anil Kumar, dropped out on Saturday.

Kumar conveyed his decision to council secretary and returning officer Vishalakshmi. He decided to withdraw from the February 17 bypoll after failing to get support from Congress and JD(S) legislators.

The bypoll was necessitated after sitting member Rizwan Arshad of Congress resigned as he moved to the legislative assembly as an MLA. Rizwan won the Shivajinagar bypoll in December last year.

“Since the notification on candidates in the fray, after the last date of withdrawal, has already been published, irrespective of any candidate’s retirement, the election has to be conducted,” an official said.

Savadi’s victory was always assured as BJP has 119 members in the House.

Still, Ramanagara BJP district president Rudresh and MP BY Raghavendra reportedly approached Kumar, urging him to withdraw. Kumar, however, denied that he was persuaded by BJP.

“I entered the fray thinking secular parties and likeminded MLAs will support me, but that didn’t happen, so I decided to retire,”he said.

A section of Congress and JD(S) politicians, led by former minister HD Revanna, had persuaded Kumar to enter the contest with the hope that disgruntlement among some BJP legislators over Savadi’s promotion as the deputy CM would result in an upset.

Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy also offered to support Kumar. Siddaramaiah of Congress refused to do the same. Congress and JD(S) did not field any candidates of their own as they don’t have the requisite numbers in the House.

Savadi must get elected to the council before February 20, otherwise he will lose his cabinet role. According to rules, a person who is not a member of either House should get elected within six months after becoming a minister. Savadi took oath on August 20 last year.

Bengaluru, May 19: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government has recommended the withdrawal of 46 cases against leaders belonging to Sangh Parivar who had apparently involved in violence during the birth anniversary celebration of Tipu Sultan in the state.

These cases – ranging from very serious forms of assaults on Muslims to unlawful assembly – were registered across Karnataka between 2014 and 2018.

Among the cases recommended to be withdrawn include those registered against senior state BJP leader Sanjay Patil, VHP leader Swaroop Kalkundri, and several district level Bajrang Dal activists.

The government recommended withdrawal of these cases under Section 321 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on March 5.

The recommendations, however, have been opposed by three crucial law enforcement departments – Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP), Director-Department of prosecution and Government litigation and Law department.

While the DG & IGP has opined that these cases “cannot be withdrawn”, both the department of prosecution and law have observed that these are “not a fit case to withdraw”.
