Bengaluru, Sept 22: A complaint against Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and other prominent BJP leaders including party president Amit Shah and working president JP Nadda, for violating the provisions of Model Code of Conduct (MCC), was lodged with the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) by a delegation of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Sunday.

"Yediyurappa had a video conference meeting from the Vidhan Soudha with working and national BJP presidents regarding the preparation for by-elections related to the mobilisation of funds and for the selection of candidates for it. They had also held another meeting at a Forest Guest House in Malleswaram where the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and the disqualified MLAs with other ministers attended and held discussions with the Advocate General with regard to the Supreme Court case and the elections," KPCC leader V S Ugrappa told reporters here.

On Saturday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced the dates for the by-polls in Karnataka along with the dates for Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

"These two acts are in clear violation of MCC and also the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and also under Section 171 of the Indian Penal Code. That is why we lodged a complaint and the CEO reacted positively. We are confident that ultimately cases will be registered and they will be prosecuted," Ugrappa added.

Speaking about the members of the BJP against whom the complaint was lodged, he said: "Today a delegation on behalf of the KPCC met the CEO and lodged a complained against the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, the state's Home, and Law Ministers, and also against Amit Shah and BJP working president JP Nadda."

Congress MP L Hanumanthaiah, who was also a part of the delegation, said that his party held the usage of government property after the dates of the by-elections were announced to be objectionable.

"The meeting by Yediyurappa took place in the government guest house along with the Advocate General after elections were announced, which is objectionable. If he had held a meeting with his MLAs or his supporters, then it was not our concern.

But what is highly objectionable is the fact that disqualified MLAs were also present at the meeting with the Advocate General presided by Yediyurappa," Hanumanthaiah told reporters here.

The by-elections in Karnataka will be held on October 21 in 15 constituencies that were vacated by rebel MLAs of Congress and JD (S). The counting of votes will take place in the same week on October 24.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: An astronomical phenomenon, ‘Zero Shadow Day', will be observed in Mangaluru on April 24 and in Udupi on April 25.

According to a press release from Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomers’ Club, the wonder will commence and people will see their shadows disappear for a few moments at 12:28 pm.

The phenomenon is called as Zero Shadow Day. If a person takes a candle in a dark room and use it to create a shadow of one’s palm on the wall, the hand will cast shadow on the wall as one moves the hand. But when one places the palm on the wall, there will be no shadow.

In the phenomenon, the sun at these times shines exactly above the heads on these days. In astronomy, this point is called as Zenith. The point in the sky directly above an observer at any given location. So it is quite clear now that on Zero Shadow Day, the sun passes through the Zenith as a result of which, all objects will have minimal or no shadow if they are on the ground.

The reason for this happens on some specific days is concerned with astronomy. The earth spins around on its own axis and causes days and nights. It also revolves around the sun causing a year. But the seasons are caused because the axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. It is because of this tilt that the sun rises every day in the east gradually moving towards the north till June 21st and then slowly proceeding towards the south till December 21st every year. “We call these days solstice. This means the sun shines between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn every day passing by the equator on the days we call equinox,” the release stated.

As the earth moves around the sun and revolves on its own axis, for all the people between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, the Sun at noon moves father and closer to the zenith passing through zenith twice causing two Zero Shadow Days per year. People at Mangaluru will observe this on April 24 and August 18 every year and People in Udupi will observe this on April 25 and August 17 every year.

Places with same latitudes will observe the same days of Zero Shadow but the time would vary with longitude. For example, people of Bengaluru as they share the latitude with Mangaluru will also observe it on April 24. While the people of Mangaluru will observe their shadows disappear at 12.28pm, people of Bengaluru will observe this at 12:17pm. Places like Moodabidri, Bantwal, Sakleshpur and Hassan will also observe Zero Shadow on April 24.

Places like Brahmavar, Karkala, Sringeri, Kudremukha, Chikkamagaluru will observe the Zero Shadow Day on the same day as Udupi on April 25.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."
