Cong 'plotting drama' for 'greedy' Siddaramaiah to be CM, says BJP

Bengaluru, Jul 7: A day after the Congress party blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the current political crisis in Karnataka, BJP leader and Union Minister Prahlad Joshi on Sunday termed the allegations "utter nonsense" and said that former chief minister Siddaramaiah is "plotting the drama".

"This is basically an unholy alliance and Mr. Siddaramaiah is behind it and the Congress party is plotting to throw out CM HD Kumaraswamy by plotting all this drama," Joshi told ANI.

When asked about Congress blaming Modi for the resignations their coalition's 11 MLAs, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, "It is utter nonsense of the Congress party. The party has become leaderless. There is no asker and teller in the party."

Attacking Modi, Congress communications chief Randeep Singh Surjewala had tweeted, "'Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram' have attained a new meaning - Mischievously Orchestrated Defections in India (MODI). Trampling of Constitution & Denigration of Democracy by BJP to topple elected govt of Karnataka by defections is their definition of 'New India'."

The turns of events unfolded as ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition slipped to the brink of collapse following the resignation of 11 of their legislators from the membership of the state Assembly.

Echoing similar sentiments as Joshi's, BJP leader from the state, Basavaraj Ingin, also alleged Siddaramaiah is "greedy" and wants to become the chief minister.

"In Karnataka, alliance government is changing day in and day out. It is revealed unchallengeable that former CM Mr. Siddaramaiah is behind the drama staged in Karnataka politics. His intention is to unseat Kumaraswamy and take over as the chief minister of Karnataka. He is just to blame the BJP for having created this scene. He is greedy and wants to be the chief minister," said Ingin.

The state government appears to have fallen into a minority forcing Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is in the US, to cut short his visit. He is expected to fly back here on Sunday.

The strength of the ruling coalition in Karnataka has come down to 105, which is eight short of the half-way mark of 113.

Congress MLAs Anand Singh and Ramesh Jarkiholi resigned from the government earlier this week.

Those MLAs, who resigned from the Assembly, include BC Patil, H Vishwanath, Narayan Gowda, S Hebbar, Mahesh Kumatalli, Gopalayya, Ramesh Jharkiholi, and Pratap Gowda Patil. The dissident MLAs have reached Mumbai and are staying in the Sofitel Hotel.

However, the Congress party is claiming that the state government is "stable".

"The coalition govt of Karnataka is stable. The government is working for the people continuously. The crisis arisen in the political scenario will be tackled by our leaders. Whatever will the party decide we will abide by this," Karnataka Minister UT Kadar told ANI.

Mangaluru, Jan 24: The Srushti Kala Vidyalaya will be conferring it's 'Srushti Kalabhushan Award' to ace Yakshagana Bhagvatha Patla Sathish Shetty.

The award ceremony will be held at RV Dental College and Hospital in JP Nagar, Bengaluru on February 2, as part of the decennial celebrations of the Vidyalaya.

Chayapathi Kanchibail, founder of the Vidyalaya, said, "The award is being given to Shetty for his services to promote the art of Yakshagana and for his welfare work through the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation."

Bengaluru, Feb 8: The BJP on Saturday drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020. 

The video, which appears to have been taken from one of the polling booths in Delhi on Saturday, shows burqa-clad women flashing their voter ID cards. While the threatening tone of the tweet is unmissable, the tweet contradicts the government's statement that no person needs to submit any documents during the house-to-house survey for updating the National Population Register (NPR) and that information provided by individuals would be accepted and recorded. 

The tweet has added to the prevailing confusion regarding the NPR exercise in the country. 

The NPR is a list of "usual residents" of the country. In 2010, the data for NPR was collected along with the house-listing phase of the Census of India 2011. The data was updated in 2015 by conducting a door-to-door survey.

Currently, it has been decided to update the NPR along with the house-listing phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the states/union territories except Assam.

Most of the opposition parties see NPR as a prelude to the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC), which has been opposed by even NDA allies like the JD(U). The NPR questionnaire asked details like the birthplace of parents. In combination with the recently amended citizenship law, protesters fear that the registry might be eventually used for NRC. 

As a result, people, predominantly Muslims, have hit the streets as India witnesses one of the most widespread civilian unrest of recent times.

Mangaluru, Jan 16: A protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register organised by the Muslim Central Committee of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts near Adiyar on Wednesday signalled a snowballing opposition to the measures.

Harsh Mander, former Indian Administrative Service officer-turned-social activist, asserted that the nation’s fight against 'fascist' forces including Bharatiya Janata Party and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh began over 100 years ago when Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa and led the freedom movement against the British.

In his address, Mr Mander asserted that the fight against CAA and NRC is also a campaign to save the secular fabric of the nation. He added that the fight began over a century ago when Hindu Mahasabha and other organisations popped up with their vision to turn the nation into a Hindu country.4
