Congress accepts defeat; people have accepted the defectors, says DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru, Dec 9: As the counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly bypoll took place for 15 seats, the Congress party -- leading in just two seats -- accepted defeat.

As of 11 am, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in 10 out of the 15 assembly seats, while the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) were leading in two seats each.

Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar, while accepting defeat, said that the party agrees with the mandate of the voters of these 15 constituencies.

"We have to agree with the mandate of the voters of these 15 constituencies. People have accepted the defectors. We have accepted defeat, I don't think we have to be disheartened," DK Shivakumar said.

Meanwhile, the BJP already started celebrations as it secured massive lead just a few hours after the counting began.

BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malaviya said that the result is a clear message to the Congress, the JDS, the Shiv Sena and the NCP to not subvert the mandate of the people.

"Massive lead for the BJP in Karnataka by-polls. [The result] Only re-validates the overwhelming mandate people of Karnataka had initially given to the BJP (single largest party) during the assembly elections. Clear message to the Congress, the JDS, the Shiv Sena and the NCP: don't subvert people's mandate," he said in a tweet.

Karnataka Ministers inspect screening facility at airport as stranded residents set to arrive home

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday visited Kempegowda International airport for inspection of the screening facility as over 10,000 people from Karnataka stranded in other countries are scheduled to arrive in the state.

Sudhakar said all safety measures have been taken for the screening and quarantine of all passengers in hotels, hostels, and school buildings.

He appealed to local residents not to panic as adequate safety measures are being taken to prevent any spread of COVID-19 infection.

80-year-old COVID-19 patient dies of cardiac arrest in Karnataka

Gadag, Apr 9: An 80-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away on Thursday due to cardiac arrest in Gadag, the district's Deputy Commissioner said.

She also had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Her body was disposed of as per the protocol, officials said.

According to the Karnataka Government, 10 new positive cases have been reported in the State today, taking the total COVID-19 cases to 191, including 28 discharged patients and six deaths.

With an increase of 540 positive COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's tally of coronavirus cases has risen to 5,734, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

Out of the 5,734 cases, 5,095 are active COVID-19 cases and 472 patients have recovered while 166 have died.

Once again Bengaluru witnesses massive protest against CAA, NRC, NPR

Bengaluru, Jan 21: A massive protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR) was witnessed at Shivajinagar's Chandni Chowk area on Tuesday.

Scores of people came together carrying national flags and placards to register their protest in the city.

Speaking to ANI, a protester said, "People of all religious community have assembled here in Chandni Chowk to protest against CAA, NRC, and NPR. We the people of India are against this law."

Terming the law as anti-constitutional, he said that we support all the states who oppose the CAA. We demand the revocation of CAA and the government should remove conditions in NPR which lead to NRC.

CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
