Congress approached us, but my hubby firm on AAP: Sidhu's wife

Chandigarh, Aug 14: Ahead of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's likely induction into Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) next week, his MLA wife Navjot Kaur on Saturday said that Congress too had approached them, but her husband had made up his mind to go with the Arvind Kejriwal led party.sidu

Navjot Kaur made these revelations in Delhi after her Friday meeting with Kejriwal. Sidhu, who stunned poll pundits by resigning as BJP's Rajya Sabha MP+ , is likely to join AAP next week. Many in Punjab believe that considering his blistering attacks on the Badal family over the years, his induction will give a fillip to AAP as well as a prominent Jat Sikh face.

"We were approached by the Congress, but there is no difference between Capt Amarinder and the ruling Badal clan. They both have had corruption cases slapped against them at one point of their political career or other. We are self-made people and want to bring prosperity to Punjab with the same conviction," Kaur told TOI. Citing their common surname and his mother's association with the former Patiala with the former Patiala based cricketer, Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh had issued a public statement that he would welcome Sidhu into his party fold.

Navjot Kaur said, "We don't want to sound arrogant, but there's nothing common between us and Capt family. Capt has never spoken against the Akalis in the last 10 years. My husband, despite BJP's alliance with SAD, openly took a stand against the ruling clan on non-completion of 11 projects, including Attari border check post safety scanners,CCTV cameras.Capt has hardly attended Vidhan Sabha sessions or Lok Sabha sessions."

Analysts in Punjab believe that Sidhus had strategically delayed the move to join AAP to avoid a bypoll in Amritsar East constituency, from where Kaur is the sitting MLA.

Kaur debunked this, saying, "Why should I betray people's faith in me... I want work done on sewerage, roads and schools in my constituency." Kaur said she hoped that there would be no political interference in Sidhu's road-rage culpable homicide case pending in the Supreme Court. "He never used force on anyone. He took a conscious stand by resigning as MP."

On video clips of Sidhu attacking Kejriwal during 2015 Delhi polls, Kaur said, "We are not embarrassed about any videos. Sidhu is a man for all seasons. He has been a cricketer... He's committed to his beliefs. He still respects PM Narendra Modi, but not his party anymore. He has even greater respect for Kejriwal for the person he is."

Jan 27: Bollywood Film Director Anurag Kashyap, who has been vocal about his political views on social media, slammed Union Minister Amit Shah and accused him of being 'cheap'.

"How timid our Home Minister is. Its own police, its own goons, its own army and security increases and invades unarmed protestors. Amit Shah has crossed the extent of cheapness and inferiority. History will spit on this animal," Kashyap tweeted.

The film director has taken an active part in the anti-Citizenship Act protest rallies and was against the Jawaharlal Nehru violence. He also came in support of his contemporary Deepika Padukone when the latter faced backlash for showing up at JNU in support of the students.

New Delhi, Feb 5: Days after a gunman opened fire in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, the epicentre of anti-CAA movement, YouTuber Gunja Kapoor was detained at the protest site on Wednesday after she was caught covertly filming the protests in a burqa.

Kapoor runs the channel ‘Right Narrative’ on YouTube and her pinned tweet on Twitter says she is followed on the microblogging site by PM Narendra Modi.

According to police, the protesters turned suspicious after Kapoor asked them "too many questions". She was caught by some of the women protesters after they identified her as the popular YouTuber. The incident led to a commotion at Shaheen Bagh, the epicentre of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a senior police official said.

She was taken to Sarita Vihar police station where her identity was ascertained, police said.

The incident sparked outrage on social media. Many took to Twitter to question why Kapoor was at the protest in disguise. Others expressed concern about her motives at secretly filming the protests.

Meanwhile, praises flew in for the women of Shaheen Bagh who can be seen defending Kapoor from angry protesters after she was caught.

This is not the first time that a right wing social media activist has landed in trouble in Shaheen Bagh where residents and other women and children have been sitting in protest for nearly two months since the passing of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 in December last year.

In January, Deepa Sharma had posted videos online about the "traumatic" experience she had when she was allegedly heckled and harassed by Shaheen Bagh protesters. While the woman's claim could never be verified, other pieces of rampant fake news aimed at delegitimising and villainising protesters has taken social media by storm.

From doctored videos of women protesters allegedly accepting they were paid Rs 500 to attend protests to alleged fights over biriyani and anti-India sloganeering, trolls on social media seem to be working overtime to taint the ongoing protests.

The latter, however, show no signs of giving up. In fact, as Delhi nears elections on February 8, protesters have arranged for music performances by eminent artists, including pop celebrity Prateek Kuhad, till February 7.

Sit in protests take place 24x7 with women showing up in thousands to spend the night and sing songs of protest. And with polls around the corner, the protests have become an active part of political discourse with Aam Aadmi Party's Manish Sisodia expressing his support for the protesters at a recent press conference.
