In fact, the victory of the BJP was emphatic in all the five Assembly constituencies. The BJP not only retained the Karkala Assembly constituency, but wrested three seats — Udupi, Byndoor and Kaup from the Congress.

Such was the scale of its victory that even the Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, Pramod Madhwaraj, had to taste defeat at the hands of his classmate of school days, K. Raghupati Bhat, by a margin of 12,044 votes.

Mr. Bhat polled 84,946 votes, while Mr. Madhwaraj secured 72,902 votes.

Halady Srinivas Shetty, the four-term MLA from Kundapur, who returned to the BJP fold, defeated his nearest rival from the Congress party and president of State unit of Indian National Trade Unions Congress (INTUC), Rakesh Malli, by a margin of 56,405 votes, the highest margin in the district. This is Mr. Shetty’s fifth consecutive win from the constituency.

In fact Mr. Shetty improved his victory margin of 40,611 votes in 2013 Assembly elections, which was the highest margin of victory in the district in that polls.

Mr. Shetty polled 1,03,434 votes, while Mr. Malli received 47,029 votes.

Thekkatte Prakash Shetty of Janata Dal (Secular) got 2,712 votes. In Karkala Assembly constituency, the three-term BJP MLA, V. Sunil Kumar, defeated H. Gopal Bhandary of Congress party by a margin of 42,566 votes.

B.M. Sukumar Shetty, BJP candidate, won the Byndoor Assembly constituency seat by defeating Congress candidate, K. Gopal Poojary, who had won four times from this constituency, by a margin of 24,393 votes.

Anupama Shenoy, former Deputy Superintendent of Police and Secretary of Bharatiya Janashakti Congress, and the lone woman candidate in Assembly elections in Udupi district, came third place by getting 1,634 votes.

Bengaluru, Jul 25: Kalmane Kamegowda, the lake man who was recently praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent Mann Ki Baat, is in serious condition after he tested positive for COVID-19, former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Saturday.

"The health condition of Lake Kamegowda is serious. It is our responsibility to save him. I demand that the state government make appropriate arrangements for emergency treatment," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The Prime Minister also praised him in Mann Ki Baat. Chief Ministers expressed appreciation. Only praising doesn't help him at this point of time. The government needs to come forward to treat him in a good hospital when he's sick," he said in the following tweet.

Kamegowda of Dasanadoddi village in Malavalli taluk had drawn the attention of the Prime Minister in the 66th 'Mann Ki Baat' for constructing ponds to conserve rainwater during the summer.

Responding to Kumaraswamy's remark, State Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar K said that he has already called up the Mandya Medical College and directed the hospital to admit and treat Kamegowda.

"As soon as I noticed the seriousness of Kamagowad's health, I called the director of the Mandya Medical College and informed him that he should be admitted to the hospital and treated. I pray to the Lord that the Kamagowadas who inspire the whole country will heal soon," Sudhakar K tweeted.

Bengaluru, May 18: Indian food delivery startup Swiggy said on Monday it would lay off 1,100 employees, or nearly 14% of its workforce, to cut costs, as a weeks-long nationwide lockdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak hits demand for online food ordering.

The company, backed by South African internet giant Naspers, also said it will scale down adjacent businesses and has already shut several of its cloud kitchens - facilities that only cater to takeaway orders - temporarily or permanently.

“The core food delivery business has been severely impacted and will stay impacted over the short term, but is expected to start growing again after that,” said Sriharsha Majety, co-founder and chief executive at Bengaluru-based Swiggy.

Swiggy, one of India’s best known startups, is among many that are laying off employees and reshaping their business in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced 1.3 billion Indians indoors and crippled business.

India is currently under a two-month lockdown, and though several curbs are being eased, public places such as restaurants remain closed, hurting restaurants themselves as well as companies such as Swiggy and main rival Zomato.

Bengaluru, Jan 22: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa has urged the business community to focus on industries that are farmers and job-oriented and promised that his government would provide all the assistance it can in setting up these industries.

“My government will go the extra mile to facilitate industries that help farmers and provide jobs for youths,” Yediyurappa said during a meeting with several investors and entrepreneurs on the first day of the World Economic Forum, which brings global industry players and government representatives face- to-face, in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

The chief minister met representatives of 2000 Watt Smart Cities Association, which is represented by sustainability professionals of Nuesch Development, a Swiss Company, and ReNew Power. Both made presentations of their projects to the state delegation.

Yediyurappa appeared impressed by the 2000 Watt’s food processing clusters (development of modern infrastructure and common facilities) projects in rural areas. While presenting their concept, company representatives said they are willing to invest in food clusters, which can provide a better remunerative price for farm produce.

“We will provide all assistance and scientific farming techniques to grow healthy food and market them with added value to the produce,” said Andreas Binkert, scientist and academician, 2000 Watts.

Madhav Bhagwat, CEO of Nuesch Development India, told the Karnataka delegation that the company specialises in carbon-neutral smart township development projects and it has already signed an MoU with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

ReNew Power delegates expressed interest in setting up solar power plants in North Karnataka districts like Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Koppal and Raichur. Samanth Sinha, CEO, ReNew Power, urged the Karnataka government to remove bureaucratic and legal bottlenecks in acquisition of land.

Industries minister Jagadish Shettar and chief secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar among others were present at the meeting.

Yediyurappa and members of the state’s delegation attended US president Donald Trump’s address at the meet. Union minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goel and Union minister of state for shipping Mansukh Mandaviya were also present in the audience.
