Mangaluru, Jul 16: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the party has failed completely in marketing the achievements of the UPA government.

Inaugurating the party convention and Ambedkar Jayanthyutsava organized by Mangaluru South Block Congress Committee here on Saturday, Kharge said that Congress concentrated only on work and silently fulfilling promises whereas BJP concentrated only on marketing.

"We are lagging behind in marketing our party's achievements,” he lamented.

“The Congress has made several noteworthy contributions and led the nation towards development. It is the Congress that is instrumental in development of ports, airports, highways, bridges in the nation. The Congress government introduced several pro-people rules like Food Security Act, MGNREG Act, RTE Act and several other similar initiatives like Mangalyaan, but we have failed to market our achievements in a proper way. Ironically, the BJP does more marketing than the actual progress they record," Kharge said and called upon party workers to join hands in the process of building party at grass root levels.

"RSS, BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders, who never lit lamp during Ambedkar Jayanti and those who do not hoist tricolor, are teaching patriotism to Congress. Modi and the BJP leaders make a loud clamour that Congress destroyed the nation in the past. However, they are shamelessly claiming the credit of development works initiated by the UPA government by just cutting ribbon tapes now," Kharge charged.

Taking a dig at the BJP's pre-election promises, Kharge said, neither black money stashed in Swiss banks has been brought back, nor employment has been provided to unemployed youth.

Hitting at the Prime Minister's frequent foreign tours, Kharge said, "Modi visits foreign countries even without invitation even though we have an external affairs minister. Prime Minister of a nation should visit foreign countries only in case of very important conclaves. Investors will come to India if our foreign policy is attractive," he added.

Kharge said the Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Bill, 2016 should be passed as a dedication to B R Ambedkar on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary. "Passing Anti-superstition Bill will be a true tribute to the architect of Indian Constitution. I am sure that BJP leader Jagadish Shettar and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, who believe in Basavanna's ideology, will not oppose the passage of the bill," Kharge said.

Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, AICC in-charge secretary Shantharam Naik, energy minister DK Shivakumar, food and civil supplies minister UT Khader, KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao and other leaders were present. Mangaluru City South MLA JR Lobo presided.

Bengaluru, July 13: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday made it clear that the government had no plans to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts beyond July 22.  The two districts will enter a lockdown starting 8 pm on July 14.

“There is no proposal before the government to extend the lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts. The chief minister requests citizens not to panic and cooperate with the government without paying heed to rumours,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.

“The lockdown is being imposed to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases in these districts. The CM has instructed officials to make all arrangements in a week’s time and make ready whatever is necessary,” the CMO said.

The clarification came after Yediyurappa chaired a meeting of the Covid-19 task force meeting. Yediyurappa also held a video conference with officials from all districts to review the Covid-19 situation, rainfall and irrigation measures.

Two more districts - Dakshina Kannada and Dharwad - have decided to impose a lockdown to control the spread of Covid-19 following Yediyurappa’s video conference. Starting July 15, Dakshina Kannada will be under a lockdown for a week whereas it will be a 9-day lockdown in Dharwad.

During his video conference, Yediyurappa noted that the number of cases was on the rise in Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Ballari, Udupi and Kalaburagi.

He further noted that Covid-19 fatalities were going up in Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag and Mysuru. He asked authorities to bring this under control. “Bidar is among five districts nationally when it comes to deaths. This has to be controlled,” Yediyurappa said, seeking a report by experts on this.

Yediyurappa told authorities to prioritize rapid antigen tests. “One lakh test kits have been procured. Use them wisely in emergency cases,” the CM said. He ordered that those aged above 60 years, those with serious illnesses and showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) have to be identified and subjected to Covid-19 tests.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar on Saturda said that he was hopeful that the Karnataka Chief Minister would take stern action against BJP MLA M Jayaram--who was on Friday seen celebrating his birthday with several villagers in Gubbi taluk in Tumkur, in violation of social isolation measures and nationwide lockdown to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

"I am sure that the Chief Minister will take action on all these types of activities. We have already petitioned the DGP. Suo moto case should be registered immediately," the Karnataka Congress Chief told media.

Speaking about the video conference meeting that Congress President Sonia Gandhi held with all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents via video conference, he said: "She has given us directions that the party has to play its own role. She said that the party needs to be very active, apart from the government."

With regards to the farmer's struggles due to the national lockdown, the Karnataka Congress Chief said that the farmers are in a 'very grim situation'. "I appeal to all the people of Karnataka that we should go to the fields and discuss with farmers and buy the materials. Let us purchase their fruits and vegetables and distribute them at the village level."

Bengaluru, May 11: As many as 343 Indians returned to Bengaluru from London by a special Air India flight on the fifth day of 'Vande Bharat Mission' on Monday. They arrived at the Kempegowda international airport at 4.40 am.

All passengers were found to be asymptomatic on arrival except one 27-year-old woman who had had an incomplete abortion and had vomiting on arrival. She has been shifted to KC General Hospital in Malleshwaram.

Dr Prabhu Dev Gowda, an officer on duty for COVID-19 screening at Kempegowda International Airport, said, "A 27-year-old woman has had an incomplete abortion of her three-month-old foetus before taking the flight from London. She was vomiting on arrival. She was shifted to Aster CMI Hospital for emergency care.”

“Thereafter, she and her husband were shifted to KC General Hospital in Malleshwaram. They will be in isolation there. Since there is nobody to look after her, we have to let the husband accompany her to the hospital where they will be in quarantine."

The patient was famished and was provided a few idlis on arrival, he added.

After she recovers at the hospital, the couple will be shifted to a hotel. As per protocol, their throat swabs were taken for COVID-19 testing too. All passengers whether symptomatic or not are being tested for COVID-19.

Dr Manjula Devi, District Health Officer, Bengaluru Rural district said that all passengers were found to be asymptomatic on arrival except this woman who is being treated as a non-COVID-19 emergency.

Ajith Rai, Devanahalli Tehsildar told DH, "All passengers have chosen to go to hotels over government hostels. We're yet to tabulate how many have chosen budget hotels, three-star and five-star hotels. Twenty of them are still here. The process is on."
