Congress delegation detained at Manguluru airport

Bengaluru, Dec 20: A delegation of Congress leaders from Bengaluru was detained at the Manguluru airport on Friday due to curfew in the violence-hit port city, where two people died of bullet injuries following the anti Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

"I was visiting Manguluru to meet the families of the two protesters who were shot dead during the protest. We were detained by the police at the airport itself," tweeted former irrigation minister M.B. Patil.

Prakash Rathod, Congress legislative council member told IANS: "S.R. Patil, Nazeer Ahmed, Ugrappa and Basavaraj Rayareddy accompanied Patil in their attempted visit to Manguluru to assess the ground situation in the light of protests and police ban order."

"The Congress leaders went to pay respects to the two people who died in Mangaluru yesterday and meet their families," Rathod said.

However, police detained the leaders at the airport, without allowing them to enter Manguluru and turned some of them back to Bengaluru in a flight, Rathod said.

Right now two leaders - Basavaraj Rayareddy and Patil, are on return flight to the city while the others will board the 5.40 p.m. flight, said Rathod.

"Our party leaders, who had gone to see the situation, have been detained in Manguluru airport. I condemn this act to silence us," said former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah.

Siddaramaiah said BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is making Karnataka another Kashmir.

"All rights enshrined in the Constitution are curtailed, he said.

Rathod assailed the BJP-led government for employing dictatorial tactics and impinging on the right to democratically protest.

"We are with the people of India. BJP cannot cow us down by using force. People will also react and the agitation will get bigger by the day," said Rathod.

The port city is under curfew since Thursday till Sunday to maintain law and order and prevent untoward incidents.

Mangaluru is about 350 kms southwest of Bengaluru in the southern state.

Internet data services on mobile devices have been suspended since Thursday midnight for two days (48 hours) across Manguluru and Dakshina Kannada district to prevent the spread of rumours and instigating vested interests from disturbing peace and calm.

About 20 people, including 15 police officers, inspectors and constables were injured in the mob attack in the port city on Thursday when police fired teargas shells and baton charged the protesters as a ban order was in force.

Two persons - Jaleel Kandak, 49, and Naushan Kudroli, 23, protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Manguluru received bullet injuries in police firing, succumbed to injuries at a private hospital on Thursday night.

Karnataka’s covid tally reaches 6,824; Udupi crosses 1000-mark; DK records 30 new cases

Bengaluru, Jun 12: Karnataka on Saturday reported 209 discharges, as the state confirmed 308 new cases of COVID-19 and three related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 6,824 and the death toll to 81.

With the 14 new cases, the total number of covid cases in Udupi district alone today reached 1005. Dakshina Kannada today reported 30 cases and the tally mounted to 263.

Today highest cases were reported from Kalaburgi (67), followed by Yadgir (52), Bidar (42) and Bengaluru Urban (31). More details to follow.

Resolution in Kerala Assembly is against unconstitutional Act passed by Centre: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 1: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that the resolution passed by the Kerala Assembly is against the "unconstitutional Act passed by the Centre".

"The resolution passed by Kerala Assembly is against the unconstitutional Act passed by the Centre. It has been noticed by the whole country," Vijayan said.

The Kerala Assembly had on Tuesday passed a resolution seeking withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Before the resolution was passed against the Act, Vijayan in a special Assembly session targeted RSS and said that citizenship law is part of an agenda.

"The CAA is part of an agenda. Muslims are being considered as internal enemies by RSS, who is controlling the ruling dispensation at the Centre," he alleged.

The new law grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday while talking about women safety, the Chief Minister said, "Those women, who are traveling face many problems, particularly regarding accommodation. To address this, government will start accommodation facilities in all towns. This project will be implemented with the help of local bodies."

Reacting to the development in the Kerala Assembly, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that Assembly has insulted the Constitution and parliament by passing a resolution seeking withdrawal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"The Constitution has delineated clearly the roles of parliament and state legislatures. When people who have taken an oath of the constitution, destroy it, it is a most irresponsible act. Both the houses of parliament have passed CAA and if a state assembly tries to hijack the Act it is an insult not only of the constitution but the parliament as well," Naqvi told news agency.

MPs are taking oath to respect and safeguard indian constitution and not to disrespect it and go agaisnt the teachings of constitution. What Central Govt has done is 100 perent agaisnt the constitution and every citizen has the right to oppose this. You are definately go with the Govt as you are paid for it. But dont force other too to follow you. What Kerala Govt has done is according to will of people and Central Govtr should respect it.

Indians stranded abroad due to corona lockdown to be brought back only if states agree to take them

New Delhi, Apr 26: The Centre will bring back the Indian citizens stranded abroad due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft, only if the respective states they belong to agree to allow them to come back home and make necessary arrangements to quarantine them after their return.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has started consultations with the State Governments on bringing back the Indians, who got stranded in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and many other foreign countries due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft to any airport in the country. The decision on facilitating their return to the country would be taken after getting feedback on preparedness of the States and the Union Territory to receive them following all required health precautions, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba said.

Gauba on Saturday had a video-conference with the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to review the implementation of the restrictions on travel and transport as well as the lockdown imposed across the country to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the Government earlier either evacuated or facilitated the return of nearly 28000 Indians from a number of foreign countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it almost stopped doing so after the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft was enforced on March 23 in the wake of the spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases in India.

Thousands of Indian students, tourists, professionals and others are stranded around the world, including in the countries, where respective governments had imposed lockdowns to contain the pandemic. They have been desperately requesting the government on social media to evacuate them.
