Congress equates Muslim League with RSS

April 18, 2016

Lucknow, Apr 18: Equating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) with the Jinnah-led Muslim League, senior Congress leader and a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Mohsina Kidwai on Sunday accused the RSS of spreading communal hatred and indulging in divisive politics. Addressing a meeting of party workers at the culmination of the Bhim Jyoti Yatra, Kidwai, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, said, "The Muslim League led by Mohammed Ali Jinnah was instrumental in dividing India in 1947, while the RSS is hell-bent in dividing the country on communal and caste lines."

congressSpeaking on the occasion, former Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, credited the success of the recently concluded Bhim Jyoti Yatra to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi. "It was Soniaji and Rahulji, who decided that the birth anniversary celebrations of Babasaheb should be held in a grand way across the country. The BJP woke up only after the news spread like wildfire from the AICC office," Shinde said.

He further stated that if people from the upper castes voluntarily associate themselves with the dalits and their cause, then there would be no chances of any conflict.

Showering praises on Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for recognizing and spotting the talent of Ambedkar, Shinde said, "Ambedkar initially wanted separate constituencies for the dalits, which was initially opposed by Mahatma Gandhi.

However, Gandhi changed his stand, when he witnessed the determination and will power of Ambedkar, and later said that it is Ambedkar who is right person to draft India's Constitution."

The former Union home minister also lauded the Congress president and vice president for reposing faith in his abilities, giving him new tasks and assignments (including the leader of the Congress Party in Lok Sabha after elevation of Pranab Mukherjee as President of India). "It is because of this that I despite being a non-general candidate, won from general seats both in the assembly election and parliamentary election," Shinde said, and added that it is because of the co-operation of the Congress that Babasaheb was actually able to draft the Constitution, while the Jan Sangh aggressively opposed it.

Shinde on this occasion also urged the dalits to rise above the lines of sub-castes and integrate to present a single and consolidated face.

New Delhi, Feb 19: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, their first meeting after the assembly polls in the national capital.

The meeting went on for over 20 minutes at Shah's residence. The meeting was earlier scheduled at the Home Ministry.

"Met Hon'ble Home Minister Sh Amit Shah ji. Had a very good and fruitful meeting. Discussed several issues related to Delhi. Both of us agreed that we will work together for development of Delhi," Kejriwal tweeted.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Indian stocks plunged over 9% on Monday, as the rapidly spreading coronavirus pandemic sent major states including the country's capital into a lockdown amid increasing fears that outbreak could bring world economies to a grinding halt.

The NSE Nifty 50 index slipped 9.17% to 7,937.75 by 0408 GMT, while the S&P BSE Sensex was 9.42% lower at 27,093.24.

Over the weekend in India, the virus drove several companies to shut operations and the government sent states into lockdowns, bringing normal life to a grinding halt.

"Panic has gone up domestically because of the lockdown situation," said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services.

"There is fear that the situation will not be brought under control soon."

The rupee hit a fresh record low of 76.05 against the dollar, as a flight into cash and worries about tightening liquidity boosted demand for the world's reserve currency.

Meanwhile, global markets crumbled, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan sliding nearly 4% as the global death toll climbed to over 14,000, further battering economic activity, and raising fears of a global recession.

After market hours on Friday, the Securities and Exchange Board of India halved position limits for certain stock futures, restricted short-selling of index derivatives and raised margin rates for some shares to curb "abnormally high" volatility amid the pandemic.

In domestic trading, the Nifty PSU Bank Index plunged 8%, while the Nifty bank index crashed nearly 10%.

The Nifty Auto Index slid 9% after several carmakers over the weekend suspended production due to the virus.
