Congress government in Karnataka is anti-Hindu, has alliance with SDPI: BJP

Bengaluru, Jan 1: BJP charged the Congress government in Karnataka with being ‘anti-Hindu’ as it had not booked killers of BJP and RSS activists over the past couple of years, released PFI activists and ‘divided’ Lingayats, all for electoral gains.

“The Siddaramaiah government is anti-Hindu. It has not brought to book killers of 20-odd BJP and RSS leaders in the past couple of years, whereas it has been in talks with SDPI for a pre-poll alliance,” senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar said. The biggest testimony for this was talks KPCC Chief G Parameshwara had with Social Demoractic Party of India (the political wing of Popular Front of India), for a pre-poll alliance between Congress and the party, he said. The Siddramaiah government had also released about 100 leaders of PFI, “an outfit criticised by people who have been demanding a ban on it,” Kumar told reporters here. Without mentioning the burning issue of separate religious status for Lingayats, Kumar lambasted the government for ‘dividing’ the community for electoral gains.

These three issues proved that the Congress government was anti-hindu and their actions were for gains in the polls, he alleged. Amid raging differences on the issue of separate religion status to Veerashivas/Lingayats, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said on December 25 that he was not making any attempts to divide any religion. The demand for a separate religion tag to these faiths has surfaced amidst resentment from within over projecting the two sects as the same. The Veerashaiva Mahasabha’ asserts that Veerashaiva and Lingayats are the same, while the other group wants the separate religion tag only for Lingayats. The latter believes that Veerashaiva is one among the seven sects of Shaivas, which is part of Hinduism. BJP and several sections of the Hindu community have maintained a cautious stance keeping away from the move to give Veerashaiva/Lingayat separate religion status. On the party’s assessment of the electoral ramifications of the Lingayat issue, Kumar said the question was of people s being ‘fed up’ with failure of law and order, farmers’ plight, the economy and communal disharmony, among others.

Referring to special meeting under BJP national president Amit Shah here today, he said the party chalked out a single line agenda of registering a win in the 2018 assembly polls. One of the most important strategies to be adopted was deployment of “page pramukhs” who would be assigned the task of issues relating to voters lists and kickstarting a door-to-door campaign to woo voters at the booth level. However, this was not the Gujarat model because the page pramukhs have been in vogue for the past two-and-a-half years, including in Uttar Pradesh elections, where BJP registered a resounding victory, he said By January 16, the party would prepare ‘chargesheets’ of various ‘irregularities’ by Congress leaders in respective constituencies, he said. From February 17 to 22, BJP would distribute the ‘chargesheets’ to people in each constituency, he said.

Udupi, Jun 24: Nearly four years after he was arrested in the murder case of NRI entrepreneur Bhaskar Shetty, the District Sessions court has granted conditional interim bail to Niranjan Bhat, one of the three prime accused in the case.

The development comes two days after the death of Niranjan’s father Srinivas Bhat(65). Though Srinivas and his driver Raghavendra were also arrested in the case on the accusation of destruction of evidence, they were released within a month.

Through his lawyer Niranjan had appealed to the court seeking bail to perform his father’s post-death rituals.

After hearing the arguments, the court granted conditional interim bail till July 7 on furnishing a bond of Rs 5 lakh. The judge directed the accused to report to the court on or before July 7 to be taken into judicial custody.

Bhaskar Shetty, who owned a chain of supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, went missing from his house in Udupi on 28 July 2016. His mother Gulabi Shetty lodged a missing person complaint on July 29. The police arrested his wife Rajeshwari, her son Navaneeth and astrologer Niranjan Bhat on the charge of murdering Bhaskar Shetty and destroying the evidence, in Udupi on August 7, 2016. Rajeshwari is already out on bail. Navneet is still in prison.

Kasaragod, June 2: As Kerala commenced fresh academic year with online classes from Monday, a ninth-standard student at Malappuram district in North Kerala ended life allegedly owing to lack of online study facilities like television connection and a smartphone at her house.

Devika, daughter of Balakrishnan, hailing from a Dalit community at Valancherry, about 25 kilometres from Malappuram town, ended her life.

Balakrishnan told the media that he could not recharge the television connection owing to financial crunches. He was working as a daily wage worker and owing to COVID-19 and lockdown, he was not having much work these days.

The family also did not have a smartphone or computer. The family members alleged that Devika was quite upset as she could not attend the virtual class that began on Monday. She was a student of a nearby government school.

Local police said that Devika, who was the eldest among four children of Balakrishnan, was suspected to have self-immolated using kerosene at a premise close to her house on Monday evening. The cause and provocations were still being probed only. No suicide notes were recovered yet.

Kochi, Jan 12: Golden Kayaloram, the fourth and last Maradu residential apartment was razed by controlled implosion in Kochi on Sunday afternoon as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The building came crashing down, leaving the entire area in a cover of white smoke.

Earlier today, Jain Coral Cove, the apartment having the maximum number of housing units among the illegally built buildings, was razed down at 11:02 am.

The authorities coordinated the operations from a control room set up at the office of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

The prohibitory orders that were clamped in the area will remain imposed for the day. The district administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

On Saturday, the 19-floor H2O Holy Faith apartment complex with 90 flats and the Alfa Serene complex with twin towers were demolished at 11 am and 11:05 am respectively.
