Congress using websites to target Narendra Modi: Arun Jaitley

Arun_JaitleyNew Delhi, Nov 30: With its vice president Rahul Gandhi's rallies not making an impact on the people, the Congress is using websites to target BJP chief ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, party leader Arun Jaitley said Friday.

In a post on social networking site Facebook, Jaitley said that environment at Modi's rallies was electrifying and claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's rally scheduled for Delhi has been cancelled to prevent comparison with Modi's rally on the same day.

Jaitley also referred to the sexual assault case faced by Tarun Tejpal, founder-editor of Tehelka and the subsequent problems being faced by the magazine and said that the publication had in the past been used to carry out anti-Modi campaigns.

"An important publication which was used in the past for more than a decade to carry on anti-Modi campaign appears to be collapsing under the weight of its own immorality," he said.

Jaitley also alleged that "dirty tricks department of the Congress" has used disgruntled police officers and civil servants to make baseless allegations against Modi but that "doesn't seem to be cutting ice."

"A large number of NGOs with invisible funding which had made a living out of keeping anti-Modi litigation alive in courts have not so far succeeded in bringing out any material evidence against him.

"What does the Congress Party then do? Suddenly a series of websites have appeared with some stories and some non-stories," Jaitley said.

He said anti-Modism was "no longer merely a political philosophy but also commerce".

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said he had commented earlier that the Congress was unable to deal with Modi.

"The Congress's undeclared prime ministerial candidate is making no impact. It has, therefore, resorted to some of its leaders confining themselves to tweets and press conferences," Jaitley said.

Claiming response to Modi's rallies has been unprecedented, he said: "I have in the last two decades after the expansion of 24X7 satellite TV, seen a lack of interest in public rallies. Narendra Modi's public meetings have revived that interest."

London, Feb 19: Indian universities had a good performance year within the emerging economies of the world as a record 11 made it to the top 100 Times Higher Education's (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020.

Only China has more universities than India in the top 100 at 30 from a total of 47 countries and territories included in the analysis released in London on Tuesday evening.

A total of 56 Indian universities appear in the full ranking of a total of 533 universities across emerging economies of the world.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), ranked 16th, is India’s top-ranked institution followed by the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs).

"There has long been a debate about the success of Indian universities in world rankings, and for too long they have been seen as underperforming on the global stage," notes Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer for the THE.

"The Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 suggests that real progress is being made by a number of institutions in a number of metrics across our robust methodology, and could mark an exciting turning point for Indian higher education, enabled in part by the Institutes of Eminence scheme," he said.

The Indian government’s Institutes of Eminence scheme was established in 2017 and one of its participating universities, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, has entered the top 100 for the first time, moving up a huge 51 places from joint 141st in 2019.

The other universities included in the Institutes of Eminence scheme that appear in the top 100 mark the biggest improvers in the ranking with IIT Kharagpur moving up 23 places to 32nd, IIT Delhi improving by 28 places to joint 38th and IIT Madras climbing 12 places to joint 63rd.

The Institutes of Eminence scheme provides participating universities with government funding and greater autonomy with the aim of moving them into the top 100 of the world university rankings, including Times Higher Education’s World University Ranking, over time.

The expectation is that this will be achieved through a number of changes including an increase in foreign students and staff, offering online courses and encouraging academic collaboration with other top universities around the world.

This year marks only the second time that 11 Indian institutions have held top 100 positions since the ranking began in 2014, when much fewer universities took part in the ranking globally.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 29: Kerala Excise department has organized a Tik-Tok competition as part of its drug addiction-free mission.

The contest will be on the effects of drug addiction on people and society. The winner goes will go home with an I-Pad as a prize.

The competition is being organised as part of the Department's intensive campaign titled "Tomorrow's Kerala, Drug and Addiction-free Kerala".

"Those taking part should post the video from their profile with the hashtag #vimukthikerala. Each contestant can post more than one video. They can challenge friends with #vimukthichallenge. The last date of receiving them is March 5," said the spokesperson of the Excise Department.

The number of likes a video gets, its theme and presentation will be the criteria on which the video will be judged.

"As soon as a video is posted on Tik-Tok, it should also be sent on the WhatsApp number 9072588222," added the spokesperson of the Excise Department.

New Delhi, May 17: With the highest-ever spike of close to 5,000 cases in the past 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in India has crossed 90,000 on Sunday.

With an increase of 4,987 COVID-19 cases being reported in the last 24 hours, the count has reached 90,927, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 53,946 today, while 2,872 deaths have been recorded due to the infection so far, with one patient having migrated. 120 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

However, on the positive side, close to 4,000 patients have also been cured and discharged in the past 24 hours, taking the tally of cured patients to 34,108.

With 30,706 confirmed cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected by the infection in the country.

It is followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with 10,988 and 10,585 cases, respectively.
The national capital, with 9,333 cases, is also one of the regions which is badly affected by the infection.
