Congress worried over HDK keeping away from Assembly by-poll campaign

Bengaluru, May 11: The result of the two Assembly seats, for which by-elections are being held on May 19, is crucial for the survival of the one-year-old JD(S)-Congress coalition government but Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy keeping away from election campaign has caused a big worry among the Congress leaders in Karnataka.

While the Congress and the BJP leaders are engaged in a no-holds barred attack during the hotly contested Chincholi and Kundagol segment amid searing summer heat, Kumaraswamy’s apathy to jump into the campaign trial is giving sleepless nights to Congress leaders. 

Congress is under pressure to retain the two seats it held during the previous election. While Chincholi seat was vacated by former Congress leader Umesh Jadhav, who quit Congress to contest as BJP candidate against Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge, the by-poll is being held for Kundagol seat after the sudden death of sitting member and minister C S Shivalli.

Kumaraswamy, who toiled hard in the just concluded campaign for the Lok Sabha elections especially in the seats allocated to JD(S) under coalition election seat sharing formula, has chosen to take ‘rest’ and returned to a private resort in Kodagu district, keeping himself away from the hurly burly by-election campaign.

The coalition government is surviving on a thin majority in the 225-member Karnataka assembly. Any set back to Congress candidates in the two Assembly seats, will jeopardise the stability of the State government.

Former Chief minister and the BJP’s strong man B S Yeddyurappa, during his campaign trial in Kundagol, said the days of survival of the coalition government was numbered and it will collapse post May 23 when counting for Lok Sabha segments is taken up.

He expressed confidence that BJP would wrest both the Assembly seats and increase its tally in the Karnataka Assembly to 106 from the present 104 and with the support of three independents it will be a force to reckon with and this would lead to collapse of the coalition government.

Knowing well about the consequences of the by-election, the Congress leaders are making all the efforts to pursue Chief Minister to take part in the campaign in their efforts to drum up the support to the coalition candidates in both the Kundagol and the Chincholi assembly seats.

According to JD(S) party circles, Chief Minister, who is upset with the Congress leader’s non-cooperation in the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, where his son Nikhil K is contesting, had contributed his decision to stay away from the campaign.

Speaking to UNI, Ramesh Babu, former MLC and the JD(S) spokesperson said “Chief Minister has chosen to take rest after taking part in the gruelling campaign for the Lok Sabha elections”.

“There is a precedent that no chief minister should campaign in the by-elections, with a few exceptions. Anyway the two seats is held by Congress and there should not be a problem for our coalition partner to retain them,” he said.

However, he also did not ruled out Chief Minister taking part in the election campaign in the coming days.

Yadgir, July 2: A fresh video of the health staff dragging the body of a Covid-19 victim and dumping it into a pit disgracefully has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred in Yadgir district of Karnataka on Tuesday, just days after shocking visuals of bodies of Covid-19 victims being handled disrespectfully in Ballari district went viral.

In the fresh video, two persons with PPE suits can be seen dragging, hurling and dumping the dead body of a senior citizen who died of covid-19. The duo dragged the body using a wooden log inserted to both hands of a plastic body bag for nearly 300 meters.

After pulling till the pit, the body was heartlessly dumped including a wooden log. Several villagers were also seen in the video.

The victim was settled in Siravara in Raichur district, although he originally hailed from Yadgir. On Sunday he was busy overseeing his daughter' wedding that was first postponed due to lockdown.

According to a relative of the deceased, on Monday he complained of breathing problems following which an ambulance was called to carry him to Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Raichur Deputy Commissioner (DC), R Venkatesh said he was brought dead to the hospital as he succumbed en-route. The family members were quarantined and the body was packed as per the protocols and sent to Yadgir as his family members informed that the victim is from the neighbouring district. "In Yadgir district he was swabbed and his test results came positive," DC informed.

As soon as residents of Honagera village learned about the arrival of the body, the family members were harassed asking them to not to bury the body in any of the fields in the village.

Sridevi, a relative of the deceased said "the locals assembled near our house and threatened consequences if the body was brought here. Fearing backlash, we asked the district authorities to perform the last rites in the farmland owned by the victim. But it is now saddening to see the video where the body was inhumanely dragged and dumped."

Meanwhile Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday (July 1, 2020) said that six staff members have been suspended in connection with the inhumane funeral of a man who died of COVID-19 in Balari district.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka crossed the grim milestone of one lakh Covid-19 cases while Tamil Nadu logged nearly 7,000 fresh infections for the third straight day on Monday as the sharp spike in recent weeks continued unabated in the southern states.

Kerala's tally inched toward the 20,000-mark and Telangana saw the total infection count beach the 55,000-mark while the cumulative cases rose to 2,872 in the tiny union territory of Puducherry as the six together added 20,629 fresh cases and their aggregate shot to 5.02 lakh.

A total of 291 deaths were reported on Monday from these states with Tamil Nadu accounting for the maximum of 77 closely followed by Karnataka with 74 fatalities, according to bulletins issued by respective states.

The cases have been rising in the region since last month when the lockdown norms were eased and thousands of people returned even as testing had been given a push.

The worst-hit was Andhra Pradesh where the Covid-19 count doubled in just eight days as the day's 6,051 cases pushed the tally to 1,02,349. It had crossed the 50,000-mark on July 20.

East Godavari district registered a high of 1,210 cases. After 16,86,446 tests were completed on Monday, the Covid-19 positivity rate in the state shot past the 6 per cent mark, a record high.

From 15,252 confirmed cases on July 1, the number swelled to the current level as every district in the state has been witnessing a severe surge in the pandemic.

The toll rose to 1,090 with 49 fresh deaths. The state now has 51,701 active cases after a total of 49,558 patients had recovered, a bulletin said.

Covid-19 cases in Karnataka spiralled to 1,01,465 as the state reported the biggest single-day spike of 5,324 new infections and 75 fatalities, taking the death toll to 1,953, the health department said.

The day also saw 1,847 patients getting discharged, taking the cumulative recoveries to 37,685.

Tamil Nadu reported highest single-day spike of 6,993 cases, taking the tally to 2,20,716 while 77 deaths propelled the toll to 3,571.

The state has added 45,038 cases since last Monday while the active cases stood at 54,896 and recoveries touched 1,62,249, including 5,723 people discharged today.

Chennai accounted for 95,857 cases of the state's tally.

In Kerala, at least 43 health workers were among the 702 people who tested positive while 745 others recovered, as the state's total infection tally touched 19,727.

The death toll climbed to 63 with two more fatalities from Kozhikode and Kottayam districts, while 9,611 people were presently under treatment, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

A total of 10,054 patients have recovered so far and over 1.55 lakh people were under observation, he told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram.

Telangana's total infection count rose to 55,532 with the addition of 1,473 cases, including 506 from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas, a government bulletin said on Monday, providing data as of 8 pm on Sunday.

With eight more deaths, the Covid-19 toll in the state rose to 471. The death rate was 0.85 per cent as against 2.3 per cent in the country, it said.

As many as 42,106 people have recovered from the infection so far, while 12,955 were under treatment.

Puducherry logged 86 new cases, pushing the overall tally to 2,872 and the toll increased to 43 with three more deaths. It has 1,109 active cases, an official statement said.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: The Karnataka government has asked all its departments and authorities to avoid during all official transactions the nomenclature "Dalit" for members belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

"All the departments and authorities of government of Karnataka are requested that (use of name Dalit) for all official transactions, matters, dealings, certificates, among others," the official circular said.

The Constitutional term Scheduled Caste in English and its appropriate translation in other national languages should alone be used for denoting the persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes notified in the presidential orders issued under Article 341 of the Constitution, the circular said.

The circular issued on May 20 notes instructions issued by the Central government in 2018, with reference to the order of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior Bench.

"That the Central government/state government and its functionaries would refrain from using the nomenclature "Dalit" for the members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as the same does not find mentioned in the Constitution or any statute," the order had said.

Pointing out that the Central government had earlier issued instructions that the words "Harijan" and "Girijan" should not be used, the circular said accordingly the Karnataka government also had issued a Government Order in 2010.
