Contesting from Udupi-Ckm as independent to send a message to high command: Cong leader

Udupi, Mar 28: P Amrit Shenoy, member of All India Congress Committee, who is contesting as an Independent candidate in the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru parliamentary constituency, said here on Wednesday that he entered the poll fray to send a message to the Congress high command that it should not take party workers for granted.

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Shenoy said that it was the Congress which was dominant in the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru parliamentary seat. He had approached KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and impressed upon them the need for retaining the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru seat with the Congress.

But the party had surrendered the seat to the Janata Dal (Secular) without even consulting workers. Pramod Madhwaraj, Congress leader, had met the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and obtained Janata Dal(S) ticket. “Half of Mr. Madhwaraj’s energies will be spent in just popularising the Janata Dal(S) symbol in the constituency,” he said.

Mr. Madhwaraj had met him a couple of days ago here and explained the situation to him. But he and a large number of Congress workers remained unconvinced. “A lot of Congress workers have put pressure on me and urged me to contest,” he said.

More than the development issues, it was religious aspects which played a vital role in the elections. He was a secular person who would take all sections of society together. “The interests of the weaker sections of society should be protected,” he said.

Both the Union and State governments had failed in fulfilling the aspirations of the people. If elected, he would stand up for interests of the common man. “It is shocking that even after four months of a fishing boat from Malpe, with seven fishermen onboard, going missing off the Goa coast, we are not able to trace it,” Mr. Shenoy said.

To a query, he said that he would not withdraw his nomination papers but would resign from the AICC soon. P.V. Bhandary, Yagnesh Acharya, Jayashree Bhat, social activists and supporters of Mr. Shenoy, were present.

Dear Amrit Shenoy, i dont agree with you.  Being a loyal party member you should follow the dicision taken by high command and none should be selfish.   There are many aspirants for the seat and high command can select one person only.  This does not mean that you should act agaisnt the party.   This shows that you are selfish and not loyal to party.   Any loyal member should not expect any for himself and he should work wth the party accepting whatever decision is taken by high command.   By contesting as indenpendnt candidate, you yourself know that you cannot win and yu will only waste few votes which should be casted in favor of congress candidate.   By doing so you are alternatively acting agaisnt your own party and helping the opponents.   God bless you with right way of thinking.   This time we should be united and fight agaisnt bjup which is anti national + anti religion + anti poor + anti farmers party.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: Congress leader and former minister U T Khader today demanded an “objective” probe by an IAS officer into the sedition case the police have booked against a school in Bidar for a play students staged on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

On January 26, the Shaheen Primary and High School was charged by the Bidar New Town police with sedition on January 26. This was based on a complaint by an Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) worker who claimed that the play staged by the students on January 21 “insulted” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On January 30, the police arrested Nazbunnisa, the mother of an 11-year-old student and Fareeda Begum, a head-teacher in the school.

“This shows how today in India and in Karnataka, the BJP is looking to suppress the voices of people. Sedition cases have no value anymore,” UT Khader told a news conference.

“When a complaint on sedition is filed, action must be taken after obtaining legal opinion. But today, a written complaint by any BJP worker is enough to brand someone as anti-national. Even schoolchildren aren’t spared,” Khader said.

“An IAS officer should be appointed to objectively probe this. If something is found, then the police can continue the investigation,” Khader said. “But the government should pressurize the police. We’ve seen what happened in Mangaluru,” he said, referring to the police shootout that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest. “I know it’s difficult for officials to resist political pressure, but a line must be drawn. All officials must come together and send the government a message, that they will not be bogged down to pressure that’s against societal interests,” he added.

Khader said he lacked faith in the BJP government. “That’s because the BJP tends to give election tickets to those who plant bombs,” Khader said, citing the example of terror-accused Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur. “Even the Aditya Rao case (Mangaluru airport bomb planter)...we don’t know what’s happening. They just want to hush it up,” Khader charged.

Bengaluru, May 23: It was a stampede-like situation near Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place after hundreds of migrants gathered and jostled to gain entry. The situation raises concerns as no social distancing norms were followed.

According to Chetan Singh Rathore, DCP Central, the reason behind the stampede-like situation was an en masse message. "What we heard was that an en masse message has been conveyed to the people of Manipur and Odisha that they would be able to go home on trains on Saturday. The message did not consider the capacity of the train which is only 1500 seating capacity for Manipur train and 1500 for Odisha train," he told media.

Singh further added, "But the people gathered were around 3000 in number for the Manipur train and 5000 for the Odisha train. Passengers with tickets and requisites were allowed to travel while others were asked to return home and wait for their turn to travel back home."

The state of Karnataka has eased lockdown restrictions across, allowing state transport services to run. Lately, the government has been running special Shramik trains from Karnataka to ferry migrant workers back to their hometowns.
