Bengaluru, Apr 7: In the past few days, unaccounted cash and material worth nearly Rs 9 crore has been seized by the police and Election Commission.
On Friday, April 6, afternoon Central division police arrested a civil contractor along with his driver for carrying Rs 1.5 crore of unaccounted cash. Police believe that the money was being transported to distribute to voters ahead of the state assembly elections.
Deputy commissioner of police (central division) Chandragupta said they intercepted the car at an election check post on New Mission Road and seized the cash in the vehicle.
The arrested have been identified as Subhash M, a resident of Lingasaguru taluk in Raichur district and his driver Venkat Sureshbabu, of Ananthpur in Andhra Pradesh.
“They failed to explain the source of income as well as their destination. We will hand over the cash and the persons to the election officials concerned,” police said.
