Controversial French star is Indian Super League's big catch just six months after antisemitism row

September 16, 2014

Mumbai,Sep 16: Former France and Chelsea player Nicolas Anelka was on Monday officially announced as the marquee player of Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Mumbai City FC, six months after the forward was sacked from English football after an antisemitic row.

The 35-year-old player, who also had stints at Arsenal, Real Madrid and Juventus, said he expects the October 12-December 20 ISL to be a thrilling experience.

Anelka Mumbai“I am pleased to join Mumbai City FC and through it participate in the exciting Indian Super League. Talented international players and top Indian talent will make the matches thrilling affairs. I look forward to using my ability to do well for my team in the matches we play,” he said.

The inaugural ISL also features other top players like Alessandro Del Piero (Delhi Dynamos FC), David Trezeguet (FC Pune City), Joan Capdevila (North-East United FC), Luis Garcia (Atletico de Kolkata), David James (Kerala Blasters FC) and Robert Pires (FC Goa). Chennai Titans are yet to announce their marquee player.

However, Anelka may have to wait before he can take the field for Mumbai City as he has a five-match ban imposed on him in England for a racially aggravated goal celebration that led to his departure from West Bromwich Albion in March.

FIFA was asked by the English Football Association to ensure Anelka’s ban was applied worldwide if he tried to sign for another club.

FIFA was unable to comment on Anelka’s playing status on Monday, which is a public holiday in Zurich where it is headquartered.

Anelka had a long career for France and played for several top clubs in a well-travelled career before his infamous “quenelle” gesture resulted in his departure from the Premier League.

Anelka later announced via Twitter that he was leaving West Brom, terminating his contract with immediate effect.

The club responded by saying the player’s statement was invalid and that it was firing him for “gross misconduct.”

Anelka was sent home from the 2010 World Cup after insulting France coach Raymond Domenech. Anelka refused to apologise and ended his international career with 14 goals in 69 appearances.

ZICO ARRIVES IN INDIA

Legendary Brazilian footballer Zico arrived in Panaji on Monday to take charge of FC Goa as its manager.

The 61-year-old Arthur Antunes Coimbra, nicknamed ‘White Pele’, reached Goa along with former Dempo midfielder Roberto Mendis Silva and was received at the airport by former All India Football Federation general secretary Alberto Colaco.

Zico will be assisted by Dempo Sports Club head coach Arthur Papas.

Indore, Jan 8:  India skipper Virat Kohli has added yet another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 runs in T20I cricket as a captain. Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 30 during India''s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Tuesday evening.

Kohli achieved the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs as captain in his 30th T20I inning. He is the second Indian and sixth overall after MS Dhoni to have achieved the feat. Dhoni had scored 1112 runs in 62 T20I games as captain.

Faf du Plessis (1273 runs from 40 games), Kane Williamson (1083 runs in 39 games), Eoin Morgan (1013 runs in 43 games) and Ireland''s William Porterfield (1002 runs in 56 games) are other captains on the list.

During India''s emphatic victory at the Holkar Stadium, Kohli also surpassed team-mate Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series, as the top run-getter in the T20Is. Kohli now has 2663 runs from 71 innings.

Both had finished 2019 as joint top-scorers in T20Is, with 2633 runs each.

India, already with an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the series, will now face Sri Lanka in the final T20I on Friday in Pune. The first match between the two teams was called off without a ball being bowled due to wet patches on the pitch in Guwahati last Sunday.

Hobart, Jan 18: In a dream start to her second innings after a two-year break, Sania Mirza lifted the WTA Hobart International trophy with partner Nadiia Kichenok after edging out Shaui Peng and Shuai Zhang in the final, here on Saturday.

The unseeded Indo-Ukrainian pair pipped the second seed Chinese team 6-4, 6-4 in one hour 21 minutes.

Playing her first tournament after giving birth to son Izhaan, the 33-year-old Sania has begun well in the Olympic year as she warmed up for the Australian Open in style.

It is Sania's 42nd WTA doubles title and first since Brisbane International trophy in 2007 with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Sania did not compete on the WTA circuit in the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons to start a family with Pakistani cricketer husband Shoaib Malik.

Sania and Nadiia began by breaking the Chinese players in the very first game of the match but only to drop serve in the next.

The two pairs played close games towards the end and at 4-4, 40-all, Sania and Nadiia got the crucial break, earning the opportunity to serve out the set.

There was no twist in 10th game with Sania and Nadiia comfortably pocketing the first set.

The second set could not have started better for them as they broke the Chinese rivals to take early lead and consolidated the break with an easy hold.

The game of the Chinese was falling apart as they dropped serve again in the third but broke back immediately to repair some damage.

Sania and Nadiia were now feeling the heat at 0-30 in the sixth game but Peng and Zhang let them hold serve for a 4-2 lead. The Chinese though kept fighting and made it 4-4 with another break in the eighth game.

The Indo-Ukraine team raised its game when it mattered as it broke Peng and Zhang for one final time in the ninth and served out the match in the next game.

Sania and Nadiia split USD 13580 as prize money and eared 280 ranking points each for their winning effort.

New Delhi, Jan 29: Badminton champion Saina Nehwal joined the ruling BJP today and is likely to campaign for the party ahead of the February 8 Delhi election.

"I have won medals for the country. I am a very hardworking and I love hardworking persons. I can see Prime Minister Narendra Modi does so much for the country, I want to do something for the country with him," the shuttler said, wearing the BJP scarf.

"I draw a lot of inspiration from Narendra sir".

Haryana-born Saina Nehwal, 29, is a major acquisition for the party in the middle of the Delhi poll campaign; she is one of the most popular sportspersons in India with a huge fan following and brand value. She is preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

A former world number 1, she has been honoured with the country's top sporting awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. She was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

The Badminton player has won over 24 international titles. In the London Olympics, she won a bronze. She was world number two in 2009 and number one in 2015.

With her tweets praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saina Nehwal was widely seen to lean towards the BJP.

One of her tweets became controversial when it was found to be identical to several others in praise of a PM Modi speech last year. Saina was trolled on Twitter with screenshots of the identical tweets. She was also among the sportswomen who put up identical tweets on Diwali thanking PM Modi for his initiative to empower women, with the hashtag #bharatkilaxmi.

The BJP roped in many famous personalities last year, including cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who was elected MP from Delhi in the national election, and wrestler Babita Phogat. Just before the Haryana assembly polls, the party roped in wrestler Sushil Kumar, Babita Phogat and former Hockey team captain Sandeep Singh. Sandeep Singh won the election and was appointed minister.
