Cops arrest 2 Income Tax officials in Rs 14 lakh bribery case

Bengaluru, Apr 5: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two Income Tax (I-T) officials in an alleged Rs 14 lakh bribery case and recovered Rs 1.65 crore in cash from them, the premier probe agency said on Thursday.

"The I-T officers were arrested in Koramangala in the city's upscale southwest suburb on a complaint from a private firm's Managing Director after a case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act," said a CBI statement.

The agency, however, did not disclose the names of the accused tax officials, the Managing Director or his company.

"When we received the complaint that the accused demanded Rs 14 lakh as bribe for favourably settling an issue pertaining to an I-T survey conducted at the office of the complainant on March 6, we laid a trap to nab the accused by asking them to deliver the amount in cash on Wednesday (April 3) at their office," said the statement.

"One of the officials was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant," said the statement.

In the ensuing search, many incriminating documents were found from the premises of the accused. 

"Besides Rs 1.65 crore in cash, we recovered $1,450 in foreign currency from the locker of the accused besides incriminating documents pertaining to the case, mobile phones and pen drives," added the statement.

The accused were produced before the competent court in the city for remand and interrogation.

Mysuru, May 30: District in-charge Minister S T Somashekar on Saturday said that the Mysuru zoo is likely to reopen in June first week and all preparations are being made with precautionary measures.

While talking to media here, he said the initiative has taken considering the well being of animals and keeping in mind to support the tourism sector. "We have already collected the opinions of public representatives of the district. District administration is all prepared to reopen the zoo and waiting for permission from the forest minister and the government," he said.

He also said that he is not aware of the reopening the Mysuru palace for tourists. Chamundeswhari temple atop of Chamundi hils will be open based on the guidelines of the central government. The government taking measures to reopen tourist spots and central government will release the guidelines in the next two days, he added.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: A 31 -year-old Bhojpuri dancer and another girl were rescued from human traffickers after the former alerted city police on landing at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday. They were to be received by a woman named Preethi at the airport.

The dancer had been told she was supposed to perform a few stage shows in the city, which has a significant Bhojpuri-speaking population. But when she realised she is likely to be pushed into flesh trade, she raised an alarm.

The woman, Radha (name changed), is a mother of four children and the lone breadwinner of the family. A few months ago, Radha came in contact with a woman named Soniya in New Delhi during a dance performance. Last month, Soniya got in touch with Radha and offered to pay Rs 40,000 per month if she performed in Bengaluru.

Radha agreed and was sent to Bengaluru from Chandigarh along with the other girl. During the journey, she learnt she was supposed to do more than just perform on stage. A shocked Radha informed the Central Industrial Security Force personnel manning KIA that she feared being pushed into prostitution. KIA police were informed and the women were rescued. Preethi was arrested.

Bengaluru, Aug 1:: Karnataka Minister BC Patil on Friday said that he has tested positive for Coronavirus.

"The report has confirmed me to be corona positive. I am in home quarantine at my residence in Bangalore," he said in a tweet.

"During a recent visit to Koppal district, five of the staff members who accompanied me were reported to be coronavirus positive," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, a total of 5,483 new COVID-19 cases and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka, the state's health department informed on Friday.

Karnataka now has a total of 1,24,115 coronavirus cases, including 72,005 active cases and 49,788 discharges.

So far, 2,134 deaths have been reported from the state.
