Cops grill Siddhartha’s car driver at undisclosed location

Mangaluru, Jul 30: A team of policemen is reportedly interrogating the Cafe Coffee Day founder V G Siddhartha’s car driver, according to whom the former went missing after asking the latter to park their car on Netravati Bridge on the outskirts of Mangaluru last night.

Amidst continued search operation in Netravati river near the bridge, the cops took driver Basavaraj Patil into custody for questioning and took him to an undisclosed place.

According to the complaint filed by the driver, Siddhartha left Bengaluru at 12.30pm to Sakleshpur. "When we reached Sakleshpur, he told me to drive to Mangaluru. When we reached the Pumpwell Circle in Mangaluru, he told me to take a left turn as he wanted to visit his site. Just before the bridge, he told me to stop the car and wait towards the other end of the bridge," the driver stated in the complaint.

After the car left, Siddhartha walked towards the other end of the bridge and told the driver to be seated in the car and also told him that he would return in some time. "I saw Siddartha walking on the old bridge for some distance," he said.

When Siddartha did not return at 8 pm, the driver called him only to find Siddaratha's phone switched off. He called his number again but it was switched off. "At 9 pm, I called Siddharath's son Amartya Hegde and informed him about what happened. He tried calling his father and later alerted our company's Pradeep Shetty, who is in Mangaluru," the complaint states.

The complaint was registered at 12.30 am on Tuesday at Kankanady police station in Mangaluru. Siddharth wore a black t-shirt and jeans pants at the time of missing.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym. 

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open. 

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health. 

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: The residents of Thokkottu welcomed a COVID-19 patient who was cured and discharged from hospital with a standing ovation. 

The man remained in quarantine after returning from Tablighi Jammat religious gathering at Nizamuddin in Delhi. He was tested positive for COVID-19 on April 4 and was shifted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.

After he was tested positive, a complete lockdown was announced within a 200-metre radius of the apartment where he was residing at Thokkottu.

The cured patient will have to remain quarantined at home for the next 14 days.

He has thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff of Wenlock Hospital who took care of him in the hospital. 

In the meantime, 12 COVID-19 patients out of 13 have been cured and discharged from the hospital in Dakshina Kannada district.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and Humanity Forum of Mangaluru today handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to the aggrieved family of Naushin, who was killed in arbitrary police firing on December 19 in the city.

A team of philanthropists led by Muslim Central Committee chairman K S Mohammad Masood visited Shaheed Nausheen’s house at Kudroli and handed over the cheque. Several philanthropists have contributed to this humanitarian aid.

Corporator Shamsuddin Kudroli, S M Rasheed Haji, Mansoor Ahmed Azad, Ibrahim Kodichal, Haneef Haji, Asif Deals and Ashraf Kinara were present among others.
