Cops, Rampal aides clash; 200 injured

November 19, 2014

Rampal clashChandigarh, Nov 19: Over 200 people were injured in a clash after the Haryana Police launched a major but futile offensive on Tuesday to arrest controversial self-styled godman Rampal in his sprawling ashram in Barwala village.

The area turned into a battle zone. The police operation was met with huge resistance from Rampal’s “private army of armed commandos” who fired gunshots from inside and hurled petrol and acid bombs injuring 105 cops, including a station house officer (SHO) who was injured in the neck.

Hours after the operation, the sect spokesperson said the police action had killed four women devotees. Their bodies were on the sect premises.

The hunt for the “godman” turned the area into a warzone, but Rampal’s arrest remained unsuccessful forcing the police to put off the operation.

Soon after the operation began, the sect disclosed that Rampal was not on the 12-acre premises, but in hospital undergoing treatment. Haryana Director-General of Police S N Vashist said: “Rampal is 100 per cent inside the ashram. The operation will now only end with the arrest of Rampal.”

Mediapersons were targeted by the police in the melee. Over a dozen journalists were beaten by the police who broke their cameras, chased them with lathis and pushed them from the scene of action. The police said at least 85 sect followers were injured in the action. Dozens of ambulances kept ferrying the injured to hospitals.

The police used brute force against the agitators. Women were dragged by cops and bundled into buses.

The police resorted to tear gas shells and cane-charge to disburse the women and children who lined up outside the sect to prevent Rampal’s arrest.

Bullet shots, acid pouches and petrol bombs were thrown at the police from inside the high walls of the ashram. Later, the police stormed the ashram . The police had to retreat as they entered the inner zone of the ashram as the area had an LPG dump . Rampal’s supporters burnt an excavator that was brought to dismantle the walls.

Vashist said they received a call from inside the sect on Tuesday morning from a follower who said that many inside the premises were being forced to stay inside and defend a possible police action.

He said babies were being used as shield. Guns, pistols and rifles were used to attack the police. Retired army and policemen owing allegiance to the sect had trained youths inside for a counter-offensive.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government is now under severe criticism for letting the situation escalate. The High Court has set Friday as the deadline to arrest Rampal who is to be produced in a case of contempt of court.

The toddler, son of a migrant labourer-couple having no recent travel history, died in the evening at a government hospital in Jamnagar, said an official release.

He was in a critical condition ever since he was admitted to the hospital, it said.

The boy, who tested positive for coronavirus two days ago, was as on ventilator support and eventually died due to multiple organ failure, said the release.

He becomes the youngest patient to succumb to COVID-19 in Gujarat, where the death toll has now gone up to 16.

The baby was the first and the only case of coronavirus infection so far in entire Jamnagar district and the youngest to be diagnosed with the disease in Gujarat.

Ever since he tested coronavirus positive, the authorities had been tracing the source of his infection.

His parents are from Uttar Pradesh and work as casual labourers in factories in the port city.

His parents, who have no travel history in the recent past, are asymptomatic (not showing symptoms) and kept under quarantine, officials said.

The locality where the couple resides in Dared village near Jamnagar city has been put under complete lockdown to check the spread of the virus, they said.

Gujarat has so far recorded 175 coronavirus positive cases and 16 fatalities.

New Delhi, Jun 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India fared much better compared to some other countries in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The PM made this observation while delivering the inaugural address to mark the 90th birth anniversary celebrations of Reverend Dr Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan.

"Earlier this year, some people had predicted that the impact of the virus in India would be very severe. Due to lockdown, many initiatives have been taken by the Government and in this people-driven fight, India is much better placed than many other nations. India's recovery rate is rising," Modi said in his virtual address.

He further warned that the time was not apt to "let our guard down".

The prime minister greeted the Mar Thoma Metropolitan and wished him a "long life and best health."

"Dr Joseph Mar Thoma has devoted his life for the betterment of our society and nation. He has been particularly passionate about the removal of poverty and women empowerment," the prime minister said.

Praising the Mar Thoma Church for its contributions to the country the Prime Minister added that it has worked to bring a positive difference in the lives of people in the country in areas of healthcare and education.

"The Mar Thoma Church is closely linked with the noble ideals of Saint Thomas, the Apostle of Lord Christ. India has always been open to spiritual influences from many sources. It is with this spirit of humility that the Mar Thoma Church has worked to bring a positive difference in the lives of our fellow Indians," Modi said.

Followers of the Mar Thoma Church from India and abroad participated in the programme through video conference.
