Cops suicide spree continues; transfer drives head constable to kill self

KarnatakaBengaluru, Jul 22: The spate of suicides involving police staff has continued in Karnataka with a constable allegedly taking his life this morning in Kalaburgi owing to issues relating to his transfer.

Annarao Saibanna Gamaga (48), a head constable with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), was found hanging from the ceiling at his staff quarters in Sultanpur in Kalaburgi. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

According to his relatives, Annarao, who was working for the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), was transferred to the IRB a year ago. Owing to poor health, he requested to be transferred back to the KSRP. However, it is alleged that his superiors demanded money to transfer him back to the KSRP. Annarao was reportedly under great stress and may have committed suicide because of the issue, his relatives alleged.

This is the fifth suicide case involving police staff in the last two weeks in Karnataka. The police have registered a case and probing the circumstances leading to Annarao's suicide.

Bengaluru, May 17: Karnataka on Sunday extended lockdown for two days until midnight of Tuesday, May 19. Earlier today, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra extended the lockdown till May 31. The state government said that the guidelines and norms as followed during Coronavirus Lockdown 3 will remain in place till 19th midnight or till further notice.

Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in Karnataka rose to 1,146 on Saturday. With 37 deaths and 497 discharges, there are 611 active corona cases in the state. 

Out of 54 new cases, twentytwo are from Mandya, ten from Kalaburagi, six from Hassan, four from Dharwad, three each from Yadgir and Kolar, two each from Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga, and one each from Udupi and Vijayapura.

Mangaluru, Jul 8: A corporator and a staff in Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have tested positive for the coronavirus. 

The woman corporator, who was under home quarantine for past few days ago, received her covid test report today. 

A staff of health department who works in MCC also tested positive for the covid-19. 

The woman corporator had recently attended a primary health centre meeting. A person who had attended the meeting was later tested positive. Hence the corporator was placed under home quarantine.

Ballari, July 26: Karnataka's minister for forests and environment Anand Singh has tested positive for COVID-19 and is in quarantine at his residence in Hospet town of Ballari district.

Minister's son-in-law Sandeep Singh confirmed it and said he has been home-quarantined and the doctors are treating him at home. It is not known who have contracted the virus from him, he told.  

A few days back, the car driver of the minister had tested positive for Covid-19. Old house of the minister located at Ranipet here was sealed down and he was quarantined at his bungalow off the ring road. 

A week ago, the minister held a meeting which was attended by doctors, hotel owners, the officials and journalists. Hence, they have been advised to undergo Covid-19 test, said a Government hospital doctor.
