Cops suicide spree continues; transfer drives head constable to kill self

KarnatakaBengaluru, Jul 22: The spate of suicides involving police staff has continued in Karnataka with a constable allegedly taking his life this morning in Kalaburgi owing to issues relating to his transfer.

Annarao Saibanna Gamaga (48), a head constable with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), was found hanging from the ceiling at his staff quarters in Sultanpur in Kalaburgi. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

According to his relatives, Annarao, who was working for the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), was transferred to the IRB a year ago. Owing to poor health, he requested to be transferred back to the KSRP. However, it is alleged that his superiors demanded money to transfer him back to the KSRP. Annarao was reportedly under great stress and may have committed suicide because of the issue, his relatives alleged.

This is the fifth suicide case involving police staff in the last two weeks in Karnataka. The police have registered a case and probing the circumstances leading to Annarao's suicide.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Coronavirus surge in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi today at 411  with with Udupi tallying 245 fresh cases and DK 166. 

A dozen deaths also reported from the twin districts. While DK reported seven fatalities, Udupi recorded five deaths. 

With this, Dakshina Kannada district's Covid-19 tally increased to 6,881 and the total number of deaths increased to 208. 

While the district has 3,369 active cases as on date, the day also saw 188 people getting discharged from hospitals. As many as 3,304 persons were discharged in the district so far. 

Out of seven deaths reported in Dakshina Kannada on Friday, five were from Mangaluru taluk and one each from Puttur and Belthangady taluks.

Meanwhile, out of 245 new coronavirus cases reported in Udupi on Friday, 175 are asymptomatic and 86 have no specific contact history. With this, the total number of cases in Udupi increased to 5,605, which includes 2,292 active cases. 

Udupi also reported five fatalities including a female victim, taking the district’s death toll to 55. Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said all the five victims were also suffering from various comorbidities. Udupi district has collected Rs 1,43,300 as penalty from people for violating rules related to social distancing and mask till August 6.

Mangaluru, May 8: Migrant workers, stranded in Karnataka due to lockdown, staged a protest on Friday at the Central Railway Station here, demanding to be sent back to their respective native places.

The workers demanded the state government to take measures and send them back to their homes.

Maintaining social distancing and covering their faces with masks, the workers were holding placards which read -- "We want to go home Jharkhand, We want justice and we want to go home."

They appealed to the state government to arrange trains and buses to ferry them to their native places and threatened to walk home if denied transport.

Several protests have erupted in different parts of the country, such as Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, as stranded labourers took to the roads demanding to be sent back home.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on May 1 had issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 with some relaxations.

Bengaluru, Jun 11: A love triangle took a violent turn when a final-year engineering student was assaulted by both her current and former lovers. She's now battling for her life in the ICU, police said. 

For the 22-year-old woman, who lives in Sidedahalli, it was a case of fast-changing relationships. She broke up with a fellow student Babith, 21, a few months ago after having dated him for four years. Four months ago, she started seeing another collegemate named Rahul, 22, and everything seemed fine. 

On June 7, she went to Rahul's house, ostensibly for his birthday party, after informing her parents. Babith got wind of it and barged into Rahul's house. The trio got into an argument, and Rahul abused and assaulted her. 

The woman decided to leave him, and went with Babith to his house in Chikkabanavara, North Bengaluru. But things didn't end there. Babith picked an argument with her. Things became so bad that he attacked her with a helmet. 

He then panicked and called her parents, asking them to take her home. When her parents arrived, they found only Babith, his mother and sister in the house. Babith's family directed them to a bedroom where she was lying motionless, with her face being badly wounded. 

When her parents demanded to know what had happened, nobody responded. They took her to a hospital where her condition remains serious. A while later, Babith came to the hospital and gave her parents the key of her scooter. He told them what had happened and allegedly warned them against filing a police complaint. 

Her mother, however, filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Soladevanahalli police. According to her, Babith had fought with her daughter at their house for not taking his phone calls six months ago. 

Shashikumar N, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said both the men had been arrested and that further investigations are underway.
