Cops suicide spree continues; transfer drives head constable to kill self

KarnatakaBengaluru, Jul 22: The spate of suicides involving police staff has continued in Karnataka with a constable allegedly taking his life this morning in Kalaburgi owing to issues relating to his transfer.

Annarao Saibanna Gamaga (48), a head constable with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), was found hanging from the ceiling at his staff quarters in Sultanpur in Kalaburgi. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

According to his relatives, Annarao, who was working for the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), was transferred to the IRB a year ago. Owing to poor health, he requested to be transferred back to the KSRP. However, it is alleged that his superiors demanded money to transfer him back to the KSRP. Annarao was reportedly under great stress and may have committed suicide because of the issue, his relatives alleged.

This is the fifth suicide case involving police staff in the last two weeks in Karnataka. The police have registered a case and probing the circumstances leading to Annarao's suicide.

Mangaluru, May 19: In a bizarre incident which exposes the publicity craze of “philanthropists”, members of a city-based organisation returned without disturbing grocery kits after villagers refused to be photographed while receiving them. 

The incident took place at Mukrampady village in Puttur a few days ago. According to sources, a team belonging to an organisation from Mangaluru had visited the village with a letter from their organisation, to distribute grocery kits to families near mosques in the month of Ramadan. 

The team members reportedly insisted the beneficiaries to pose for pictures with the team near a mosque while being given the food kit. The villagers refused to fulfil their wish.

The organisation members then left the place without handing over the Ramadan kits, sources said.

Ballari, Jul 17: An MLA from Karnataka’s Ballari district has tested positive for covid-19. P T Parameshwar Naik, Congress MLA from Huvina Hadagali constituency confirmed that he contracted coronavirus.

Parameshwar Naik had developed symptoms a few days back. He was subjected to Covid-19 test at a hospital in Harapanahalli. On Thursday, his report came positive. Naik’s house at Harapanahalli has been sealed. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru.

The other legislators from the state to test positive for coronavirus are: MLAs C T Ravi (Chikkmagaluru), Bharat Shetty (Mangaluru North), Ranganath (Kunigal), Sharath Bachegowda (Hoskote), Rajkumar Patil Telkur (Sedam), Ajay Singh (Jewargi), Prasad Abbayya (Hubballi-Dharwad East), MLCs Bhojegowda and M K Pranesh.

Puttur, Jul 7: A woman died after a wall of compound collapsed on her in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday, July 7. 

The victim was identified as Vasanti.

The wall got weakened due to heavy rain at Golithottu area in Puttur. Her body was sent to the post-mortem.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.30pm when Vasanti was working in the backyard of her house.
