Cops suicide spree continues; transfer drives head constable to kill self

KarnatakaBengaluru, Jul 22: The spate of suicides involving police staff has continued in Karnataka with a constable allegedly taking his life this morning in Kalaburgi owing to issues relating to his transfer.

Annarao Saibanna Gamaga (48), a head constable with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), was found hanging from the ceiling at his staff quarters in Sultanpur in Kalaburgi. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

According to his relatives, Annarao, who was working for the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), was transferred to the IRB a year ago. Owing to poor health, he requested to be transferred back to the KSRP. However, it is alleged that his superiors demanded money to transfer him back to the KSRP. Annarao was reportedly under great stress and may have committed suicide because of the issue, his relatives alleged.

This is the fifth suicide case involving police staff in the last two weeks in Karnataka. The police have registered a case and probing the circumstances leading to Annarao's suicide.

Mangaluru, June 29: Six more personnel from Ullal Police Station in Mangaluru taluk have tested positive for covid-19. 

With this, the total number of covid positive cops from the Ullal Police Station mounted to 10.

Official sources said that throat swabs of five police personnel and a Home Guard from Ullal today received positive report today. Earlier, four other cops were tested positive. 

In addition to the police personnel, two undertrials arrested by the Ullal police on the charges of murder attempt at Thokkottu Olapete too were tested positive for Covid-19 June 28.

New Delhi, Feb 24: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting raids at more than 20 locations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The latest raids are being carried out in connection with ISIS conspiracy cases.

More details are currently awaited regarding the cases.

Meanwhile, NIA had on February 15 filed a charge sheet against two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists before the agency special court, Jammu. The two terrorists are identified as Khalil Ahmad Kayani (34) and Mohammad Nazeem (23), both residents of Haveli Farwad Kahuta district in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The case is related to the arrest of the two accused near Nilkanth Nala, approximately 700 metres inside the Indian side of LoC, in Gulmarg Sector of Baramulla district.

Mangalore, Jan 12: Thieves reportedly stole around 70,000 cash from a MESCOM ATP machine located at Chembugudde in Thokkottu, Police said here on Sunday.

Police said that the theft took place in the MESCOM sub-division office at Chembugudde. It was said that the thieves broke open the room where the MESCOM customers bill payment machine was located and stole 70,000 rupees cash from the ATP machine.

This machine had nine lakh rupees cash. The amount was reported to have been transferred at around 1500 hrs on Saturday.
