Cops thwart cattle smuggling bid; four arrested; animals rescued

Mangaluru, Aug 3: The police have arrested four persons after intercepting a lorry in which they were smuggling cattle to Kerala from Udupi yesterday.

The arrested cattle smugglers have been identified as Radhakrishna, a Keralite, Subhash Shetty and Sathish Kumar, both localites. The police have also arrested lorry driver Naimuddin, who also hails from Kerala.

The police rescued seven cows and six calves that were being transported for a slaughter house.

The operation was carried out by the senior officers of Mangaluru city police along with the sleuths of Kavoor and Panambur police station under the guidance of city police chief T R Suresh.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: After directions from Karnataka government, migrant labourers are being sent to their native villages in batches by hiring as many as 60 buses.

Divisional Controller of Mangaluru KSRTC Division S N Arun said on Sunday that 100 buses from Mangaluru and Puttur ferried stranded labourers on Saturday. Buses were disinfected before the journey.

Buses also left from Dharmasthala, Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia to different destinations. In adherence to social distancing rules, each bus left with 20 to 22 labourers.

Bengaluru, Jul 24: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner on Thursday issued a public apology after "local staff" sealed the doors of two apartments with metal sheets in a building where a positive case of COVID-19 was reported in Dommalur.

Earlier on Thursday, BBMP sealed doors of two flats near Dommalur, in a building wherein a COVID-19 case was reported. A woman with two children, along with an elderly couple stayed in those flats. After the woman tweeted about the incident, BBMP officials removed steel sheets from doors.

Taking the matter into consideration, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, took to Twitter to express an apology for "over-enthusiasm" of his officials.

He tweeted, "We are committed to address any issues that result in stigma. Apologies for the over enthusiasm of the local staff."

He also said the BBMP is committed to treating all citizens with dignity. "I have ensured removing of these barricades immediately. We are committed to treat all persons with dignity.

The purpose of containment is to protect the infected and to ensure uninfected are safe," he tweeted.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsava Samiti has chosen senior Journalist and Assistant Editor on Udayavani Daily Manohar Prasad for the Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2019-20.

The award will be presented to Manohar Prasad in recognition of his contribution in the field of Journalism.

He will be given the award during the valedictory of the Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach on January 19.
