Cops thwart cattle smuggling bid; four arrested; animals rescued

Mangaluru, Aug 3: The police have arrested four persons after intercepting a lorry in which they were smuggling cattle to Kerala from Udupi yesterday.

The arrested cattle smugglers have been identified as Radhakrishna, a Keralite, Subhash Shetty and Sathish Kumar, both localites. The police have also arrested lorry driver Naimuddin, who also hails from Kerala.

The police rescued seven cows and six calves that were being transported for a slaughter house.

The operation was carried out by the senior officers of Mangaluru city police along with the sleuths of Kavoor and Panambur police station under the guidance of city police chief T R Suresh.

Mumbai, Jul 1: The Maharashtra government will set up a Marathi medium college in Kolhapur for the Marathi- speaking people residing in the border areas of Karnataka, a minister said on Tuesday.

Higher and technical education minister Uday Samant, in a statement here, said the decision has been taken with a view to cater to the educational needs of the Marathi-speaking population residing in the neighbouring state.

He said the new state-run college will be a sub-centre of the Shivaji University at Kolhapur.

The Kolhapur district collector will provide a five- acre plot for the proposed college following which all necessary official permissions will be given, Samant said.

The college will start functioning from the next academic year, the release said.

Acommittee headed by Shivaji University vice- chancellor Nitin Karmalkarwill work out the modalities for establishing the educational institute, it added.

The border areas of Karnataka have a sizeable Marathi- speaking population.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has summoned an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

The schools, malls and other public places have been shut to control the spread of the deadly virus.

Schools in the state have announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure amid Covid-19 scare.
