Bengaluru, Aug 18: In what could be fresh trouble for BJP Karnataka president and chief ministerial candidate B.S. Yeddyurappa, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered two FIRs against him in connection with land denotification cases, August 17.

Mr. Yeddyurappa recently got relief from most corruption cases. BJP leaders claim that the FIRs are part of a “political vendetta.”

Denotification of 257 acres

The cases pertain to the alleged illegal denotification of 257 acres, notified for the formation of Dr. Shivarama Karanth Layout by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

The BDA had issued a preliminary notification for 3,546 acres in villages between Doddaballapur and Hesaraghatta on December 30, 2008. However, during this stage, Mr. Yeddyurappa, then Chief Minister, allegedly issued directions to drop 257 acres, based on applications from several landlords.

Private layout

The landowners later took an endorsement of their lands being dropped from the BDA. Sources said a private layout was developed on a part of the 257 acres, allegedly causing pecuniary benefits to many.

The preliminary notification of the 3,546 acres for the Dr. Shivarama Karanth Layout was quashed by the High Court in September 2015 as the BDA did not implement the plan for which the land was notified for acquisition.

The ACB booked Mr. Yeddyurappa and four others under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Sources said dropping 257 acres from the preliminary notification of the layout included 20 such separate instances, all part of a complaint filed by Dr. Ayyappa Dorey, a social activist.

ACB sources said of the 20 instances, preliminary inquiries were completed in two and hence two FIRs.

Hassan, Mar 13: In what could have been a major tragedy, an under construction flyover across Hassan-Mangaluru railway level crossing, near the new KSRTC Bus stand here collapsed today.

Fortunately no casualties occurred despite six concrete beems of 50 feet height, collapsed and broke into pieces.

The much awaited project was completely neglected by the successive governments for over a decade due to politics.  It was sanctioned eight months ago.

The Rs 42 crore project was taken up by a joint venture between state, center and South Eastern railway. The contractor or the Engineer were not present when the incident occurred.

Blaming the contractor, the locals alleged that poor quality of work led to the incident. No contractor or engineer was present even during construction, they added. Siddaiah, who runs an eatery near KSRTC bus stand said that it could have been a major tragedy if people were underneath the flyover when it crashed. The incident should be probe and the contractor should be punished, he added.

Davangere, Jul 19: A 9-year-old sniffer dog ran 12 km in the night to trace a murder accused and helped the police arrest him in Karnataka's Davangere rural area, an official said on Sunday.

"Doberman Pincher Tunga ran 12 km non-stop from the crime spot at Basavapattana in the city to a house at Kashipur in the rural where murder accused Chethan, 25, was hiding and helped us arrest him on July 17," Davangere Police Superintendent Hanumantha Rai said on phone.

Davangere is 260 km northwest of Bengaluru.

"Though Chethan allegedly shot dead his friend Chandra Nayak with a stolen service revolver on July 10 over sharing the booty (gold ornaments) of the theft they had committed recently with two others. We took female dog Tunga to the crime spot on July 16. She led the sleuths to the area where Chethan was hiding with two accomplices," Rai recalled.

While trained sniffer dogs normally run 4-5 km from a crime spot, Tunga could track the accused 12 km away.

When Tunga's handler (Head Constable Prakash) took her to the crime scene at 9.30 pm, she sniffed around and ran 12 km non-stop to Kashipur. She halted at a wine shop and went to a food joint later. Then she stopped at a house nearby at 12.30 am.

The prime accused (Chethan) was present in the house of his relative. He was arrested after he confessed to the theft and the murder.

The police are on the hunt to trace Chethan's two accomplices who fled from the house they were hiding in.

Karnataka Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Amar Kumar Pandey felicitated Tunga on July 17 at a function here for cracking the murder case with its exceptional sniffing traits.
