Council Chairman's fate now hinges on JD(S) support

Bengaluru, Jun 15: The continuation of D H Shankaramurthy as Legislative Council Chairman will depend on the JD(S). The Council on Tuesday had admitted a notice by the ruling Congress seeking to move a resolution to remove Shankaramurthy.

The resolution (commonly referred to as no-confidence motion) against Shankaramurthy will be taken up immediately after question hour on Thursday. To oust the chairman, the Congress needs the support of 38 members. The party has 36 members on its side, including the support of three independents, and is falling short of two crucial votes.

The BJP has 23 members, including the chairman. Congress and BJP leaders have held talks with JD(S) State President H D Kumaraswamy seeking the support of the party. But, the JD(S) is playing its cards close to its chest, keeping the two national parties on tenterhooks.

Both BJP and Congress leaders have stated that they are confident of getting the support of the JD(S). The JD(S) has asked its MLCs to assemble in the party office in Vidhana Soudha at 9 am on Thursday, where a final call on whom to support will be taken, sources said.

If the JD(S) decides to support the resolution, then Shankaramurthy will have no option but to resign. On the other hand, if the JD(S) decides to oppose the move, then the combined strength of the BJP and the JD(S) will be 36 bringing it on par with the Congress.

The votes of two independents - Basavaraj Patil Yatnal and M D Lakshminarayana - who have no affiliation with any party, will be crucial. All three parties on Wednesday issued whip to their members stating that it is mandatory to be present in the House on Thursday.

There was also speculation on Wednesday that in case the JD(S) decides to support the Congress, some of its members may abstain from voting.

Meanwhile, MLC D U Mallikarjun, who got elected to the Council with the support of the BJP and JD(S) MLAs in 2014, is returning from the United States on Wednesday night. The BJP is banking on his support. According to rules, Shankaramurthy cannot preside over the House when the resolution is taken up. However, he can participate in the proceedings and even cast his vote.

Shankaramurthy presided over the House proceedings for just one hour on Wednesday.

Seven relatives who attended funeral test positive for covid-19

Kasaragod, Jul 27: Seven persons belonging to two relative-families who attended a funeral recently had been tested positive for Coronavirus on Monday.

Sources said the two families had been to Thavinjal near here for the funeral of a man who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 19.

Later, the samples of these seven persons were sent for testing after they developed symptoms of COVID-19, the result of which came out on Monday.

Mangaluru | Family’s presence of mind during covid victim’s last rites preserves communal harmony

Mangaluru, Jun 28: The patience and presence of mind exhibited by the family members of youth covid-19 victim thwarted the attempt by a few miscreants to create communal disharmony in the coastal city today.

A 31-year-old youth from Idya in Surathkal, who was under treatment for covid-19 at designated Wenlock Hospital in the city, passed away last night.

Even though there is a Muslim graveyard under the jurisdiction of Idya mosque, it was waterlogged due to heavy rains.

Hence, the Idya mosque management had obtained permission from Mangaluru’s Bolar mosque management to bury the mortal remains of the youth in Bolar graveyard.

All necessary arrangements were made at the Bolar graveyard for the burial this morning. Meanwhile, a few residents of Bolar belonging to another community staged a protest against bringing covid-19 victim’s mortal remains to Bolar.

Mohammad Husain, general secretary of Bolar mosque, said that the family members of the departed youth exhibited their presence of mind and urged the Muslims of Bolar to preserve communal harmony.

“The Bolar mosque committee had given green signal for the burial and all arrangements were made. Meanwhile, a few people staged protest and warned us against burying the covid-19 victim’s body. When the aggrieved family members came to know this, they immediately cancelled the plan,” he said.

“The aggrieved family requested us to uphold communal amity and co-existence. They decided to bury the body in Idya itself. Then the protesters also returned,” he said.

Burial in Bolar after DC’s intervention

When the mortal remains were being taken towards Surathkal in the ambulance, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada ordered the authorities concerned to take a U-turn and bring back mortal remains to Bolar.

The DC said it was wrong to take the mortal remains to another place after making all necessary armaments in Bolar graveyard. In order to pacify the porters it was decided to dig another grave on the other side of the graveyard, sources said.

Won't get involved in any act of bringing down govt: HDK

Bengaluru, Jan 6: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday said he would not get involved in any 'wicked act' of bringing down the B S Yediyurappa-led government in Karnataka, amid claims that 15 to 20 BJP MLAs were ready to come out.

Clarifying that he would not disturb the government, the former Chief Minister said for him, the development of the state was important. "With great difficulty, you (Yediyurappa) have become Chief Minister for the fourth time, (I am) happy, I have nowhere said that I will disturb your government. Even now some people come and ask why I'm sitting silent when 15-20 people are ready to come out of BJP and why don't I make an attempt (to poach them), Kumaraswamy said. Speaking to reporters in Hassan, he sought to know why he should get entangled in that 'sludge' and he was not in a hurry.

"I will not get involved in a wicked act of removing a responsible government like Yediyurappa did. For me the development of the state is important," he said.

Though Kumaraswamy had raised questions about the longevity of the BJP government ahead of the December 5 bypolls, he had even then given clear indications that he would not attempt to pull down the administration as it would affect the development of the state.

The ruling BJP had swept the by-elections by winning 12 of the total 15 seats, helping the Yediyurappa government retain the majority in the Assembly.

With BJP winning 12 of the 15 assembly constituencies, it's numbers went up from 105 (including an independent) to 117, which is well ahead of the halfway mark of 111 in a 223-member Assembly (two seats-- Maski and R R Nagar-- are vacant due to pending litigation in the High Court).

The BJP came to power after the Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government collapsed as 17 MLAs had rebelled against the alliance leadership and resigned as legislators, to later favour the saffron party.
