Court orders man 7 years jail for raping minor Dalit girl

Mangalore, March 31: Dakshina Kannada District 2nd sessions court on Wednesday, sentenced Muhammad Iqbal, resident of Donthila, Koukrady village in Puttur taluk to seven years imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a minor Dalit girl.


The court also fined the accused Rs 10,000.


In a complaint filed by the accused it was said that 25 year old Iqbal had raped and given life threat after taking 16-year-old dalit girl to a forest at Bajathur in an Omni van from Nellyady at around 5.30 pm on June 6, 2010.


A case had been registered under Dalit Atrocity Act. The then ASP of Puttur had submitted a charge sheet against the accused in the court.


The Judge of District 2nd sessions court RM Shettar pronounced that the accused has been found guilty under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.


The court has directed that the fine amount be handed over to the family of victim.


Public prosecutor C Venkataramana Swamy argued on behalf of the victim.

Mangaluru, Apr 22: City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha, on Wednesday, interacted with families of Covid-19 warriors of the Police Department through a special video conference to infuse confidence in them.

He spoke to the family members of the police personnel who, along with ASHA workers, are monitoring the home quarantined people and even assist them in supplying essentials and medicines.

Most of the family member of the police personnel were of North Karnataka origin and the Commissioner asked them to stay safe by staying at home and explained to them the good work done by their family members in the Police Department.

Hassan, July 31: A police sub-inspector (PSI) reportedly hanged himself at his official quarters in Channarayapatna town today morning.

The deceased has been identified as Kiran Kumar, 34, who was in charge of Channarayapatna rural police station.

Sources said that he was upset after two murder cases were reported in the last 24 hours in his limits. Kiran reportedly told colleagues an hour before the extreme step that he feared he would be suspended.  

According to locals, the SI was upset after news of the two murders due to alleged negligence of the police spread on social media. He killed himself before a visit by senior officials. IGP, southern range, and SP Srinivasagowda was planning to visit the town and the spots where the murders took place on Friday.

Kiran, a native of Lalanakere village in Arsikere taluk, was known for his rapport with local people. He was alone when the incident took place. His wife and children had gone to Lalanakere for the Varamahalakashmi festival on Thursday night. The body was shifted to the mortuary for a postmortem.

Udupi, Jul 7: A hotelier committed suicide by jumping into a well at Hiriadka in Udupi district last evening. 

The deceased is Raghavendra Bhat (48), a resident of Kadiyali and owner of Hotel Shivasagar in Kadiyali.

He had been to his brother's house in Hiriyadka where he resorted to the extreme step. 

He was known for organising tiger dance competitions during Sri Krishnashtami every year.

He had contested the Udupi CMC election from Congress party, but had lost by a few votes. Later he had joined the BJP.

A case has been registered ar Hiriadka police station and investigations are on.
