Court rejects bail plea of journalist accused of sexually assaulting schoolboy

Udupi, Apr 21: The district special court here has rejected the bail plea of journalist Chandra K Hemmadi, 40, who was accused of sexually assaulting a boy student.

He has been charged in 21 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

The accused had filed a petition in court on March 27 seeking bail in the first case filed against him in Byndoor police station. However Vijay Vasu Poojary, district special prosecutor convinced the court that after introduction of Pocso Act, it is first time that 21 cases were lodged against one accused in the entire country and therefore, his bail pea should be rejected.

District special judge Chandrashekhar M Joshi, who heard the arguments over the controversy, rejected the bail petition of the accused.

Chandra Hemmadi was arrested on November 28, 2018, based on the case filed at Byndoor police station for allegedly sexually harassing school students. A total 16 cases were registered against him at Byndoor, three at Gangolli and one each at Kundapur Rural and Kollur police stations.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday held a meeting with opposition parties at his office here over COVID-19 situation in the state.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress leaders SR Patil and DK Shivakumar participated in the meeting. From Janata Dal (Secular), former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna were present.

"Congress legislative party leader Siddaramaiah and DK Shivkumar have arranged the Chief Minister to request the central government to announce a special package of Rs 50,000 crore to Karnataka to fight coronavirus and also special packages requested for small and medium scale industries," said Siddaramaiah's media secretary.

Meanwhile, Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside.

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: In order to bring down the accident rates, Karnataka government is planning to increase the penalty for road offences, state Transport Minister Laxman Savadi announced here on Thursday.

Addressing media persons here, he said, ''The Centre had brought an amendment to increase the penalty amount. We too have a similar proposal, which we will discuss, post the budget session.

''Before bringing in the amendment, we will create awareness among the road users. By increasing the penalty amount, the number of offences and accidents will come down,'' Mr Savadi added.

Udupi, Mar 2: The Kundapur police carried out raids at various clubs in Kundapur Sub-division limits and arrested around 50 persons involved in illegal gambling and seized Rs 2.5 lakhs from their possession, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, on Sunday night, based on credible information, the Kudapur Sub-division police led by ASP Hariram Shanker and team raided various clubs in Goliyangadi, Siddapur, Koteswar and Basrur where the accused were found gambling illegally.

All the clubs had taken court permission for recreation but were illegally indulging in gambling. They had also violated the court conditions and were involved in illegal gambling.
