CPI-M believes in 'gun'-tantra, says PM Modi

Agartala, Feb 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday fired a fresh salvo at the ruling Left government in the poll-bound Tripura and said the latter party does not believe in democracy but violence.

Addressing a gathering at Santirbazar in Tripura, the Prime Minister said, "Communist Party does not believe in 'gantantra' they believe in violence and 'gun-tantra'. Left party in Tripura does not believe in democracy. What they believe in is violence."

He further said that the Left party wass attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the state as it is scared of its defeat in the elections.

Exhorting the people of the state to oust the CPI(M) government from power, the Prime Minister said, "They (CPI-M ) will have to answer about all their wrongdoings in the last 25 years.

People of Tripura have suffered for 25 years due to the misrule of Left party. I urge people of the state to remove them."

He also took a dig at the Congress party saying that the "Left and Congress are two sides of same coin who have ruined the state."

The Prime Minister further questioned the CPI(M) government for not ensuring the minimum wages and not implementing the recommendations of seventh pay commission.

He also recounted the work done by the Centre for Tripura and said, "We want to enhance connectivity in Tripura. In our journey to build a 'New India', we also want to build a modern and new Tripura. We simplified the norms relating to bamboo. Earlier it was classified as a tree, we changed it to grass. This helped so many bamboo growers."

The legislative assembly election in the CPI(M)-ruled state will be held on February 18 to elect members of the 60 constituencies.

Kolkata, Jan 28: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday said she is ready for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act but the Centre has to first withdraw the contentious law.

Banerjee said protesting against the decisions of the centre doesn't make opposition parties anti-national and iterated that she will not implement CAA, NRC or NPR in the state.

"It is good that the prime minister is ready for talks but the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) must be revoked first. They (Centre) did not call an all-party meeting before taking a decision on Kashmir and CAA.

"We are ready for talks but first withdraw this Citizenship Amendment Act," Banerjee, a staunch critic of the BJP, said addressing a protest programme against CAA through paintings.

The West Bengal assembly had on Monday passed a resolution against the CAA to become the fourth state after Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan, to do so. The state assembly had on September 6, 2019, passed a resolution against the NRC.

New Delhi, Jul 10: With the highest single-day spike of 26,506 COVID-19 cases and 475 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India reached 7,93,802 on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total number of cases, 2,76,685 are active, 4,95,513 have been cured/discharged/migrated and 21,604 have died so far due to the infection.

With as many as 2,30,599 COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,26,581) and Delhi (1,07,051).

Meanwhile, 2,83,659 samples were tested for coronavirus on Thursday, taking the total number of samples tested up to July 9 to 1,10,24,491, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Golaghat, Jul 18: A total of 96 animals have died in the Kaziranga National Park in Golaghat district of Assam due to floods, the state government informed on Saturday.

"So far, 96 animals have died in the park including eight rhinos, seven wild boars, two swamp deers, 74 hog deer and two porcupines," park officials said.

A report from the government of Assam stated that a total of 132 animals had been rescued from the Kaziranga National Park. The park is currently 85 per cent submerged under floodwaters.

"Water level at Pasighar and Dibrugarh are below the prescribed danger level. The floodwater in Numaligarh, Dhansirimukh and Tezpur are still above danger level," the report stated.

At least 76 people have died and nearly 54 lakh people have been affected in 30 districts of Assam due to floods caused by the monsoon rains and the rise in water levels of the Brahmaputra river, informed the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Friday.
