Bengaluru, Jul 11: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday directed the police top brass to invoke two stringent laws to curb violence in the coastal region.

Presiding over a meeting, he advised them to exile trouble-makers and habitual offenders or book them under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA) or the Goonda Act. The laws provide for preventive arrests. He also asked them to crack down on Sri Rama Sene, Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Popular Front of India and the Social Democratic Party of India, saying they were responsible for the violence.

He said Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts were known for religious harmony. Following the stabbing of an RSS worker and his subsequent death, the region has been in the grip of communal tension over the past week. “People in the two districts are peace-loving. But in the last few years, communal forces have converted the coastal belt into a communal laboratory,” Siddaramaiah said.

On the basis of a report from the director general and inspector general of police, the government is considering a ban on communal organisations in the coastal belt, he said. He directed the top brass to identify and act sternly against ‘handlers’ of people indulging in violence. “I have spoken to the DG and IGP, ADGP and officers who earlier served in these two districts. We will use their feedback to control the violence. We will not let anybody claim a human life for political mileage,” he said. He said “unseen hands” become active during the election year to foment trouble.

DG & IGP R K Dutta will soon visit the two districts to monitor the situation, he announced.

Mangaluru, May 2: Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, a prominent Muslim religeous leader in coastal Karnataka has urged the Dakshina Kannada district administration not to end the covid-19 lockdown before the end of the blessed month of Ramadan.

The appeal comes in the wake of reports that the state government may allow opening of clothe shops during the month of Ramadan to felicitate Muslims for Eid shopping.

"Muslims in the district have completely cooperated with the district administration in making the lockdown sucessfull. They have refrained from going to mosque even for Juma and Taraveeh during Ramadan. Such a lockdown is necessary to contain the pandemic," said Musliyar, who is also the Khazi of Udupi and Chikkamagaluru.

If the district administration withdraws lockdwon or relaxes it, people in large numbers may storm cloth shops wherein it physical distancing will be difficult, Musliyar warned.

He said that Muslims in the region have decided to observe Eid ul Fitr, a festival which marks the end of the blessed month, in a simple way maintaining physical distance. Hence the lockdown should be relaxed only after the festival, he suggested.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”
