Sex case costs prof 9 increments, transfer

Mysore, January: After dillydallying for six months, the Syndicate of the University of Mysore has initiated action against Prof Shivabasavaiah accused of sexually harassing a research scholar.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, vice-chancellor Prof V?G?Talawar said the syndicate that met recently had decided to cut nine increments of the professor, besides transferring the accused to the PG centre at Chamarajanagar as a coordinator.

The action follows a report submitted by the women’s harassment complaint committee in June last holding the professor guilty of seeking sexual favours from research scholar Saritha.

Talawar said Shivabasavaiah had been appointed professor at the university in 2003 by direct recruitment. According to the government order, if the allegations of sexual harassment are proved, the salary of the accused could be reduced to the minimum.

The government has been informed of the action taken and Shivabasavaiah has also been given the transfer order, he said.

Shivabasavaiah was earlier suspended as the chairman of the Department of Zoology. Even as the vice-chancellor was addressing the media, Saritha’s husband D?R Vijaykumar barged into the chamber and created a ruckus.?He said he was unhappy with the action taken by the Syndicate. “You have failed in providing justice. What would you have done, if your wife or children were in a similar situation,” he asked Talawar. The?vice-chancelor, who initially maintained silence, later accepted a memorandum from Vijaykumar.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.

Six migrant workers have been killed and five others seriously injured when a speeding bus ran over them on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway near in Muzaffarnagar, officials said on Thursday.

The accused driver, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, has been arrested, said SSP Abhishek Yadav.

The workers were going on foot to their homes in Bihar from Haryana when they were hit on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway between Ghalili Check Post and Rohana Toll Plaza, about 20 km from here late last night, the official said.

The injured -- Sushil, Nathu Saini, Pawan Saini, Pramod and Ramji Rai --were rushed to hospital.

Two of the deceased were identified as Bijender, 25, and Harsh, 20. The rest were yet to be identified.

Kota, Feb 26: At least 24 people died and four others sustained injuries as a private bus carrying a wedding party fell into a river on Kota–Dausa highway in Bundi district on Wednesday morning, police said.

The wedding party with 28 persons on board was headed to Sawai Madhopur from Kota early morning when the driver apparently lost balance of the bus while traversing a bridge near Papdi village under Lekhari police station limits, Lakheri Sub-Inspector Rajendra Kumar said.

The bus, subsequently, plunged into Mej river from the bridge that had no wall or railing, Kumar said.

Thirteen people died on the spot while 10 others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital, he added.

The deaths include 11 men, 10 women and three children.

The injured were rushed to Lekhari government hospital from where the critically injured are being referred to a government hospital in Kota, the SI further said.

Most of the injured people were rescued with the help of locals in the village, he added.

Mej river is a tributary of the Chambal river in Rajasthan.
