‘Driver turned robber’ held, Dh7m recovered

Dubai, January 30: Easy cash and a quick getaway. It was that simple. But an Asian who drove off with $2 million entrusted to him by his employer was arrested in another emirate with the cash, thanks to some smart police work.

The driver was not sponsored by his employer and authorities had very little information about him. It was hard tracking him down, police officials said. Their persistence paid off when they found and arrested the driver-turned-robber in Fujairah on Saturday.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, on Sunday said the Asian businessman had trusted the driver and left the money in the car, and the man simply drove away. Investigations showed the driver had sped to Abu Dhabi and later dumped the car in Dubai to shake the police off his trail.

Police set up 63 teams which covered all of Dubai and sent officials to Oman. They also kept watch on the borders with the armed forces, but were informed that the man was holed up in a house in Fujairah. The house was soon raided and the man and his two accomplices were arrested. Police said the cash had been converted to dirhams and Dh7 million was recovered from their possession.

Colonel Salem Al Rumaithi, Deputy Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the money was later returned to its owner.

Major General Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, lauded the CID teams and said the exchange house which converted the $2 million into dirhams should have informed the police when it came to such a large amount.

‘‘A circular had been sent to money exhanges which said conversion of large amounts of money should be done only after informing the police, but the exchange did not follow procedures,’’ he said. ‘‘We have informed concerned authorities to take legal action against the exchange house.’’

Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander in Chief of the Dubai Police, also praised the CID teams for their swift response.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 5: One man has been arrested in connection with the death of a pregnant elephant in Palakkad district here, Kerala Forest Minister K Raju said on Friday.

"One accused identified as Wilson has been arrested in connection with the case. More people are involved. The process to arrest all the accused is underway. Strict action will be taken in the matter to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future," Raju told reporters here.

The elephant had died in Palakkad district on May 27 after it ate a pineapple stuffed with crackers and forest officials said that it died standing in river Velliyar after it suffered an injury in its lower jaw.

Raju said that the forest department has appointed three teams to probe the matter, and added that police are also investigating the incident as explosives were used.

"There may be some type of crackers inside the fruit. In such cases, blast occurs and the animal can not even drink water. The primary post mortem reports said that this case is like that. Let it be investigated," he said.

"Man and animal conflict is natural in our state as people residing close to the forests. The government gives compensation for farmers, Rs 10 lakhs compensation if a person dies in an animal attack," the Minister added.

The death of the pregnant elephant has sparked a controversy, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan terming the unfortunate death as "a painful thing" and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar saying that the Centre has taken a "serious note" of the incident.

According to the preliminary post-mortem report, the immediate cause of the death of the female elephant was drowning followed by inhalation of water leading to lung failure.

The elephant was seen standing in the river with its mouth and trunk in the water for some relief from the pain after the explosive-filled fruit exploded in its mouth.

Vijayawada, Aug 9: The number of those killed in the fire at a hotel being used as a COVID-19 facility in Vijayawada rose to 10 on Sunday, said Vikrant Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government announced Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia each to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

According to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also ordered an in-depth probe into the accident and directed authorities to take steps to ensure better medical services to the victims of the accident.

"The hotel was taken on lease and run by Ramesh Hospitals, a private hospital where COVID-19 patients were being treated. 40 patients and 10 medical staff were at the hotel at the time of the incident. 

Officials were directed to launch immediate rescue measures," said Mekathoti Sucharitha, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of the lives in the fire mishap and spoke to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy over the phone and enquired about the accident.

The mishap took place in hotel Swarna Palace which was taken on lease and run by a private hospital for COVID patients.

Bareilly (UP), May 19: Samajwadi leader Chhotelal Diwakar and his son, Sunil Diwakar, were shot dead in broad daylight in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The entire incident was caught on camera.

The murder was apparently a fallout of a dispute over laying of a road under MGNREGA.

Chhotelal Diwakar had contested the 2017 assembly elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket.

Superintendent of Police, (SP), Sambhal, Yamuna Prasad, said, "Some work was being carried out under MGNREGA due to which some dispute happened. Two people have been shot dead. We will reach the spot of the incident to find more details."

According to his family members, Diwakar and his son had gone for a walk in the fields when the assailants came on a motorbike and after a brief altercation, shot them dead. They fled on foot, leaving their motorbike behind.

A large number of SP workers reached the village soon after the news of the double murder spread.

SP Yamuna Prasad who reached the spot that falls under Behjoi police station, soon after the murders, said that a manhunt has been launched for the assailants. He said that further investigations were underway and the bodies have been sent for post mortem.
