Fire safety drill turns tragic in Bangalore

Bangalore, February 25: In a cruel twist of irony, a mock drill to boost fire safety awareness of employees claimed the life of a welfare officer, Nalini, at a readymade garment factory in the Yeshwanthpur industrial suburbs here on Friday.

Twenty-two-year-old Nalini’s enthusiasm to demonstrate safety techniques to her colleagues proved too costly, as the drill, organised by the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services Department, went dangerously wrong and killed her instantly.

In the mock drill, as many employees of the Bombay Rayon Fashions Limited (Unit-14) watched, Nalini’s colleague first emerged out of a window between the second and third floors of a four-storey building. A rope tied around her waist and chest ensured she was safely secured.

Once the colleague landed, Nalini crawled out of the window. Facing the wall, she started her descent to the ground holding on to the rope which suddenly snapped at the ground peg. As Nalini fell, her head crushed on impact. A critically wounded Nalini was admitted to a Basaveshwarnagar hospital where doctors declared her dead.

A resident of Gauribidnur, Nalini lived with her brother in Kodigehalli. The RMC Yard police attributed the accident to lack of adequate safety measures by the Fire Department and the factory management.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother Harish, the police registered a case (causing death by negligence) against the chairman and managing director, general manager and HR manager of the company and the Fire Department. A departmental eqnuiry has been ordered.

A week ago, the HR department of Bombay Rayon Fashions Limited Unit-14, in Yeshwanthpur, wrote to the Fire Department requesting a mock drill to train its employees in tackling emergency situations. The Fire Department fixed the drill for February 24 at 11 am.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.

New Delhi, May 26: A massive fire broke out on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in the slums of the Tughlaqabad area in south east Delhi in which over 250 shanties were gutted, however, no one was injured, fire officials said.

Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer, told IANS, "We came to know about the fire in the slums around 12.15 a.m. following which 28 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. And the fire was brought under control by 4 a.m."

He said, the Tughalaqbad slums have over 500 shanties, out of which over 250 have been destroyed in the fire.

He said, it took time for the fire tenders to reach the spot as it was on the hills, but the fire was doused within four hours and by 8 a.m. cooling off procedure has also been completed.

When asked if there is any casualty in the incident, he said, "No injury or casualty has been reported."

He also said that as of now the actual reason for the fire is not known. "But we are trying to find out the reason of the fire," Garg added.

South East Deputy Commissioner of Police R.P. Meena said, "In the night it seemed that almost 500 shanties were gutted. However, in the morning it became clear that only 250 shanties have been gutted in fire."

He said, the South East district police after receiving the call also rushed the ambulances and the local police team in the area for rescue operation. Meena further said that very few people were residing in the shanties, and the people came out of their shanties after the fire broke out in one of them.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: City Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru City have arrested two drug peddlers from Kerala and have seized banned products from their possession.

According to officials the arrested persons have been identified as Shinto Thomas (35) of Wayanad and Tajudden Talat (29) of Thiruvananthapuram.

"We have seized 4 kg 350 grams of Hashish oil, 21.5 kgs of Ganja, Rs. 9300 cash, two mobile phones, two ganja crushing tools, and 625 empty boxes and other articles from them", police said in a statement.
