Fire at 85-year-old market reduces 170 shops to ashes

Bangalore, February 25: More than 170 shops at the 85-year-old heritage Russel Market here, selling goods ranging from fish to flowers, were reduced to ashes following a major fire that broke out early on Saturday, police said.

There were no casualties, they said, adding they suspected electrical short circuit to be the cause of the fire.

The fire broke out around 4.10 am in Russel Market in Shivajinagar police station limits, they said.

Built during British rule in 1927, the market housed shops that sold goods such as fruits, mutton, fish, vegetable and flowers.

Around 20 firefighters fought for over five hours to douse the fire, police said. Bruhut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Shankaralinge Gowda, who visited the spot, said officials were estimating the damage and suitable compensation would be announced in the event of vendors losing their shops in the inferno.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President G Parameshwar, who visited the spot along with area legislator Roshan Baig, demanded payment of compensation to the affected immediately.

Parameshwar said the BJP-ruled BBMP had failed to steps to maintain and repair the heritage market.

"If BBMP had taken appropriate steps to maintain and repair the building, the mishap would have been avoided," he said.

Nagpur, Feb 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation said that it has arrested a former employee of Union Carbide Bhopal, who was absconding since 2016.

A senior CBI official said on Wednesday that the agency sleuths arrested S I Qureshi from Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Tuesday, who was convicted by a local court here in connection with the Bhopal gas tragedy case.

The official further said that he had been absconding since 2016.

He added that the convict would be produced in a district court.

On December 3, 1984, forty tonnes of methyl isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory and settled over slums in Bhopal

A Bhopal court convicted eight people in 2010 to two years each in jail over the gas plant leak that killed thousands of people.

The eight convicted included the Chairman of the Indian arm of the Union Carbide (UCIL) Keshub Mahindra, Managing Director V P Gokhale, Vice-president Kishore Kamdar, Works Manager J Mukund, Production manager S P Chowdhury, Plant superintendent K V Shetty and Production Assistant Qureshi.

The CBI had taken over the Bhopal gas tragedy case on December 12, 1984.

Kota, Feb 26: At least 24 people died and four others sustained injuries as a private bus carrying a wedding party fell into a river on Kota–Dausa highway in Bundi district on Wednesday morning, police said.

The wedding party with 28 persons on board was headed to Sawai Madhopur from Kota early morning when the driver apparently lost balance of the bus while traversing a bridge near Papdi village under Lekhari police station limits, Lakheri Sub-Inspector Rajendra Kumar said.

The bus, subsequently, plunged into Mej river from the bridge that had no wall or railing, Kumar said.

Thirteen people died on the spot while 10 others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital, he added.

The deaths include 11 men, 10 women and three children.

The injured were rushed to Lekhari government hospital from where the critically injured are being referred to a government hospital in Kota, the SI further said.

Most of the injured people were rescued with the help of locals in the village, he added.

Mej river is a tributary of the Chambal river in Rajasthan.

Gonda, Apr 9: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room as he was missing his wife stuck at her parents' place due to the lockdown, police said.

The incident took place in Radha Kund locality here on Wednesday, they said, adding the deceased has been identified as Rakesh Soni, 32.

As per information, Soni's wife had gone to her parents' place and was stuck there due to the lockdown and he was missing her due to which he committed suicide, Inspector Alok Rao said.

A probe is on in the mater, he said.
