Bangalore, March 16: At a speed of around 120 kmph, death came in the space of a heartbeat for 19-year-old Sushmita Patil. Three of her friends escaped with injuries, after the driver of the car in which they were heading to their college, lost control of the vehicle, and it toppled near Handralli bridge on NICE road here around 9:15 am on Thursday.The teenaged granddaughter of Davanagere MLA S Shivashankarappa and former Member of Parliament R?S?Patil, a student of R V Engineering college was with her friends Akhil Arun, the driver, Namrata and Anirudh, all from the same college.
Anirudh, describing the incident to Deccan Herald, said:?“We were on the right lane of the road and a truck was moving on the left lane in the same direction. Suddenly, the truck started to move towards our car (KA 01 MG 9268) and Akhil, who was driving, lost control at a curve on the road. The truck hit the front axle, toppling the car.”
The car belonged to Akhil, who is in a private hospital nursing a spine and neck injury. Namrata has broken ribs and an injured knee while Anirudh only had minor injuries. They are out of danger.
The police confirmed that the car was travelling at a speed of 120-140 km per hour with Sushmita sitting right behind Akhil’s seat.
Anirudh further said that Sushmita was still breathing when he managed to get all three of them out of the car after he himself had managed to get out through the back door.
Not letting the situation blur his logic, Anirudh immediately called his parents and friends from college for help. And just in a few minutes, they took Sushmita to a nearby hospital which refused to treat her, citing lack of ICU facilities.
“The second hospital we took her to declared her as brought dead,” Anirudh said, barely able to contain his emotions. The massive head and internal injuries proved fatal.
The police believe that cautious driving could have avoided the accident.
