Youth shoots at cops inside Kanpur police station

Kanpur, March 30: A sub-inspector and a constable of Uttar Pradesh police were shot at and critically wounded inside a police station by a drunken youth here early Friday, police said.

Sub-inspector Devendra Singh was shot at twice in the head by a youth at the Naubasta police station where he is the station officer. He was rushed to the Regency Hospital where he is battling for life, police spokesman said.

The constable injured in the firing is in serious condition but out of danger.

Police officials said the incident took place around midnight. The youngster, whom Singh had chided after complaints by his father that he used to create a ruckus in the house, barged into the police station and, before any one could understand what was happening, whipped out his revolver and shot Singh, police said.

In a bid to escape, he also shot at the constable on duty. The youngster was overpowered by other security personnel and arrested, police said.

The profusely bleeding policemen were rushed to the hospital where Singh is in critical condition while the other cop is in the ICU but out of danger.

The incident has sent shockwaves in the police establishment as this is a rare instance when an official was attacked inside the police station.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 22:An accused in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act jumped into the sea on Wednesday morning when he was taken for evidence collection at Kasaba in Kasargode district, police said.

Accused Mahesh was arrested following a complaint by his neighbour on Tuesday evening.

The police said that they took the accused to the seashore to collect evidence in the case when Mahesh jumped into the sea. Two police officials too jumped in after him to catch hold of him but could not locate Mahesh.

Later, swimmers were deployed to try and locate the missing man.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Assets worth Rs 78 crore have been attached by the ED in connection with a money laundering probe against former ICICI Bank Chairman Chanda Kochhar and others, officials said on Friday.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued for attachment of the properties that includes Kochhar's Mumbai-based house and some other assets belonging to a company linked to her, they said.

The book value of the attached assets is Rs 78 crore, they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and others in a case of alleged irregularities and money laundering in giving loans by the bank to the Videocon group.

The owner of the spa is absconding and the manager has been arrested.
