Woman gets life term for murder of daughter-in-law

Kolar, April 7: A Second Additional Sessions Court here has sentenced a woman for life imprisonment for the murder of her daughter-in-law and her son for three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 each.

Judge Veeranna G Tigadi delivered the verdict.

The convicts Seetamma and her son Srinivas are residents of Dharmarayanagar in the city. Lakshmi, a resident of Maruti?Layout in Srinivaspur, was married to Srinivas in 2001. However, the mother-son duo soon starting harassing her to bring more money.

Srinivas was demanding money to clear off the loans taken for the marriage of his sister Seeta.

On September 24, 2011, Seetamma along with sons Srinivas and Gangadhara Murthy and daughter Seeta, poured kerosene on?Lakshmi and set her ablaze. She was admitted to a hospital, where she died the following day.

The city police submitted a dowry harassment and murder charge sheet against the four in the court. While court found Seetamma and Srinivas guilty, it acquitted Seeta and Gangadharamurthy of the charges.

Srinivas, convicted of dowry harassment, may have to spend another six months in jail failing to pay the fine amount of Rs 25,000.

The court has also ordered a deposit of Rs one lakh each in the names of Srinivas’s children Kushala and Puneeth.

The court has authorised Gouramma, mother of Lakshmi, to spend the interest amount on the education of the children.

Principal Public?Prosecutor Pujari Rudrappa argued on behalf of government while M Srinivas argued on behalf of the accused.

Thane, Apr 24: A 34-year-old man was allegedly attacked on suspicion of being a COVID-19 patient and died after falling into a gutter during the assault in Kalyan town of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when Ganesh Gupta had stepped out of his home to purchase some essentials amid the COVID-19 lockdown, an official said.

On noticing some policemen manning the street, the victim took an alternate route, where a few passersby assaulted him after he coughed while walking, he said.

The men suspected him of being a COVID-19 patient and attacked him, causing him to fall into a gutter and die, the official said.

The deceased's body was sent for post-mortem and a case of accidental death has been registered as of now, the station house officer of the Khadakpada police station said.

Jun 5: The fear of contracting COVID-19 infection allegedly forced a 65-year-old man to commit suicide in Maharashtra's Beed district, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred at Mangewadi in Patoda on Thursday, when a passerby found the body of Asaram Pote hanging from a tree in his farm, an official said.

The police were immediately alerted and Pote's body was brought down in the presence of his relatives and locals, he said.

A suicide note was found on the deceased's person, in which he said that he had taken the extreme step as he was scared of contracting COVID-19 infection and no one should be held responsible for his death, the official said.

A case of accidental death was registered in this regard and further probe was underway, he added.

Panipat, Mar 3: A 22-year-old man was charred to death after he came in contact with a live electricity wire while posing for a TikTok video near the Matlaudha railway station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when Vikas, a resident of Dharamgarh village, climbed a pole over which the wire was passing and posed for the video, police said.

His three friends were standing below when the accident took place.

Vikas came in contact with the wire carrying 25,000 volts current and was burnt, police said.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem and started investigation into the matter.
