Bangalore 8: A 21-year-old youth celebrating his birthday in the company of his friends died in the early hours of Saturday when he fell from the 13th floor of an apartment building in Sanjay Nagar police limits.

Adit Nair, a II year BBM student at CMR College, Banaswadi and his friends decided to celebrate his April 8 birthday two days early, as some of them would not be in town on the day. Nair, a resident of Indiranagar II Phase, and his friends gathered at the flat of his friend Namith on the 10th floor of Chartered Apartments in Bhoopasandra around 9:30 pm on Friday. The flat belongs to Namith’s father, Dr Ashok Kumar, who heads the radiology department in M S Ramaiah Hospital.

The party went on till late in the night. Around 2 am, the boys who were allegedly drunk, moved to the terrace on the 13th floor. In high spirits, Adit climbed on to the 3 x3 feet wide ventilation shaft between the apartment blocks, that was covered by a slender fibre sheet.

But the thin cover was unable to hold his weight and gave way, plunging him straight to an instantaneous death, police said. The impact of the fall was such that the body and face were disfigured beyond recognition.

Adit’s family had moved to Bangalore from Kerala and is settled in Indiranagar. His father, Jagan Mohan is a manager with a construction firm.

Suja Bennet, principal of CMR Institute of Management Studies said: “ He was a very pleasant boy who took part in extra curricular activities and still managed to perform good in academics. The college will mourn the loss of its student on Monday morning.”

Hyderabad, MAY 28: A three-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a newly drilled open borewell in Telangana's Medak district was found dead in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The kid's body was retrieved at around 4 am after a nearly 10 hours' long rescue operation involving different agencies, they said.

"He died a while before we evacuated him, most likely due to the mud that covered him from the top sealing off necessary oxygen supply, " Medak District Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti told PTI.

The boy had accidentally slipped into the 120- feet borewell at around 5 pm on Wednesday in an agricultural field located in Papannapet mandal of the district when he was walking with his grandfather and father, police earlier said.

As part of rescue efforts, a parallel trench was dug along the borewell hole with the help of earth excavating machines and oxygen was supplied into it, but the efforts went in vain as the boy's body was found stuck at a depth of around 25 feet, the police said.

Apart from the police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were also involved in the rescue operation.

The borewell into which the child fell was one among the three dug by the family since Tuesday night to try and find water for their fields. But none of them yielded any water, police had said.
