Bangalore, April 30: A senior citizen was killed when he was knocked down by a speeding SUV carrying Tumkur Rural MLA Suresh Gowda, near Nelamangala Main Road on Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 10.30 am, when the victim, Thimma Hanumaiah, 69, was crossing the road. Hanumaiah sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital on Nelamangala Main Road.

Dr Manjappa, the orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital, said the victim was talking when he was brought to the hospital. “We conducted a scan on the patient and found severe internal bleeding due to injuries caused to major organs. Since our hospital did not have the facilities to handle the case, we referred him to Columbia Asia Hospital in Yeshwantpur,” he said.

However, Hanumaiah succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Dr Sunil Rao from Columbia Asia Hospital confirmed that the patient was brought dead to the hospital.Hanumaiah, a resident of Rajajinagar and a retired HMT staffer, was a native of Kenchiganahalli in Nelamangala.

On Sunday, Hanumaiah was on his way to Chunchanagiri. En route, he had stopped his car near a ‘kalyana mantap’ to attend the wedding of a distant relative. He was crossing the road when he was hit by the speeding SUV.

Balaramaiah, a distant cousin of Hanumaiah, who witnessed the accident, told Deccan Herald that the impact of the accident was such that he was thrown up into the air for about 10 feet.

“We came to know that the SUV belonged to MLA Suresh Gowda, when he got off the car after moving a safe distance ahead. He did not even care to see the victim’s face, instead arranged for another car to pick him up and went away. We were shocked with his apathy. Soon, one of his followers came and tried to talk to us,” he said.

However, Suresh Gowda denied that he had fled the scene after the accident.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said: “It was an accident. Actually, pedestrians are not allowed on the national highway. When this man suddenly came on to the road, the driver tried his best to avoid hitting him, but lost control of the vehicle. It is not true that I fled the scene. In fact, I left two taluk panchayat members and my personal assistant with them. They have been with the victim’s family throughout the day. It is the electronic media that has sensationalised the case. I will visit the family.”

But, Hanumaiah’s family said they were hurt by the statements made by the MLA that he would provide compensation to the victim’s family. The victim’s son, Prasanna Kumar, working with Kirloskar, condemned the statement and said they did not want the MLA’s money as nothing could compensate his father’s death.

Nelamangala police registered a case, seized the vehicle and arrested the driver, Dayanand.

New Delhi, Jan 6: A blind student who is pursuing research in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was also attacked by the mob that perpetrated violence in the University yesterday.

"I thought that the mob which came yesterday would disperse after raising a few slogans but they indulged in violence. They were targeting ABVP students. They beat me with sticks and rods. When I went to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, I came to know that there are many other injured students there," Surya Prakash, the blind student pursuing research in the University told ANI.

"I talked to my family members. They are really worried about the situation here. I qualified in the National Eligibility Test (NET) last year but I want to study and hence I am continuing research in JNU. How can we do anything in this atmosphere of fear? I am receiving calls from anonymous numbers threatening me not to come in front of the media. They are saying that as I am blind, I would become the face of this case," he added.

Another PhD student, Santosh Bhagat recounted his experience.

"In the evening at around 7 pm, many masked men entered the hostel. They had rods and sticks in their hands. We tried to go out but the attackers had entered the premises by then. I locked my room from inside but the attackers broke the door and entered my room and attacked me. They pushed me from the first floor and I fell down and sustained an injury. Later, I took shelter at one of the Professor's flat. Later, I was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Cantre," Bhagat said.

On Sunday evening, more than 30 students of the university, including JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh, were injured and were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after a masked mob entered the JNU and attacked them and professors with sticks and rods.

The JNU administration and political leaders, cutting across political lines, condemned the attack on students and urged the police to take action against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the situation remained tense but peaceful outside JNU on Monday morning as the university guards maintained a strict vigil at the gate, checking I-cards of all those entering the university.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.
