19-yr-old girl fakes kidnap to meet chat friend in Nagpur

Nagpur May 5: A 19-year-old college student from Bhayander faked her own kidnapping, travelled 800km to Nagpur and landed up at the doorstep of her 'Facebook friend', whom she had met online and became obsessed with. The male friend, 21-year-old Ravi (name changed), who was shocked to see the girl in his hometown, and escorted her to Mumbai, but she simply followed him back to Nagpur. Luckily for Rupali (name changed), Ravi did not take advantage of her and alerted the police when she arrived at Nagpur the second time around.

On April 27 evening, Rupali-a second-year commerce student from Bhayander-left home to attend coaching classes at Andheri. When she did not return home in the evening, her parents tried to contact her on her cellphone, only to find it switched off. After frantically calling all her friends who said they had not seen the girl, her parents lodged a missing person's complaint with the D N Nagar police in Andheri. On one of his many attempts trying Rupali's cellphone number, her father got through to her on April 28.

She told him that she had been kidnapped by two men while returning home from her tuition classes on April 27 evening. She said the kidnappers had forced her into a Maruti van, and she was being held at an unidentifiable location. Before her father could get more information, the line got disconnected, and the phone was of reach again.

The parents panicked and alerted the Bhayander police who began tracing the girl's movements. They learned that Rupali had not attended her coaching class lectures the day she disappeared. They kept a tab on her cellphone, and found that it was being used to call a Nagpur number. The police contacted their counterparts at Sitabuldi police station in Nagpur, and the number was traced to a mobilephone belonging to Ravi.

When questioned by the police, the youth informed them that he was surprised when Rupali called him out of the blue on April 28 saying that she had come to Nagpur to meet him. "It turns out that they met online in August last year and became e-friends," said a police official. It was later learnt that Rupali had developed a habit of befriending strangers on the internet. "Ravi told us that he had escorted Rupali to Bhayender on April 29 and dropped her off at the railway station after she promised him that she'd return home." It's a 12-hour train journey.

On May 1, Ravi received a call from a public telephone booth in Nagpur. It turned out to be Rupali. He asked her to wait for him, and alerted the local police. The Bhayander police who were working with Nashik investigators arrived at Nagpur with the girl's parents and took her back home. She was counselled by the police and family members. No complaint has been registered.

New Delhi, Jul 17: The first FIR against Volkswagen and Audi in India for installing cheat devices in their cars to misrepresent emissions has been filed in Noida.

The FIR was filed by Noida resident Aniljit Singh against the top officials of Volkswagen and Audi in India and their headquarters in Germany. These include Rahil Ansari, Brand Director, Audi India, Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head, Audi India, and Bram Schot, Chairman, Audi AG.

The FIR reviewed by media agency cites forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The complaint has cited the global emissions scandal where VW was found to be installing a cheat device in its cars, in the absence of which, the cars produced 10-40 times emissions beyond the permissible limits.

The complainant said that in 2018 he had purchased seven Audi cars worth crores of rupees. At the time of taking the delivery, the complainant said that he inquired if the cheat devices were installed in India and he was told by the company that they were not, as in India's emission norms were not as stringent and the country being a growing market for Audi, no such device was implanted.

The complaint said that the authorities in India observed that Audi cars' emissions for nitrogen oxide were 5-8 times the permissible limits and after the National Green Tribunal imposed a penalty of Rs 500 crore on VW, the complainant realised that he had been duped of his hard earned money.

He alleged that the accused persons had misrepresented the complainant by forging the documents and devices and caused wrongful gains to themselves and wrongful losses to the complainant. These officials had made wrong records to capture the market, with malafide intent and under a pre-planned conspiracy had induced and defrauded the complainant.

The accused persons are guilty of cheating the customers and have induced the complainant to part with hard earned money for sub-standard cars. The accused are also guilty of forging the documents on which they had sought various clearances.

The complainant has demanded that the allegations may be thoroughly investigated by a senior official.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.

Gorakhpur, Feb 16: Two unidentified policemen allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman in a hotel room near a railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur.

The incident took place on Thursday after which the woman informed her family members. The FIR was registered in the matter on Friday, police said.

A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including gang rape has been registered against two unidentified police men at the Gorakhnath police station, they said.

No arrests have been made so far in this connection, the police added.

Members of various political parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP and Purvanchal Sena staged a sit-in demonstration at the office of the district magistrate (DM) demanding suspension of all staff members of the Gorakhnath police station as well as a magisterial probe into the matter.

"The girl is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. She has made serious allegation of rape by two policemen. During investigation we found that the hotel has CCTV footage and also took the statement of guard," SSP Gorakhpur, Sunil Kumar Gupta said.

"Prima facie, the woman went to the hotel room willingly with some men. However, a probe is underway and culprits won't be spared," he said.

The woman told media that both the policemen thrashed her and accused her of being involved in prostitution.

She claimed that she requested them to leave her but they beat her and raped her. Later, they asked her to go home in an autorickshaw.

The survivor also told media and investigating policemen that she will be able to identify the hotel room where the crime took place as well as the two policemen who allegedly raped her.

The woman said she runs coaching classes at her home and her father is a labourer.
